Re: H-bonds [ENDORSED]

A hydrogen bond works with only Fluorine, Oxygen and Nitrogen. If we take a look at the period table and remember the trends for electronegativity we see that these 3 elements are among the most electronegative, in which fluorine has the highest electronegativity. Hydrogen has a + charge, so the att...

For iron the Latin name is used and so it becomes ferrum. If the whole coordination compound is negative then we add the -ate suffix.

Re: name of molecule structure

What is the structure of SCl4 called? Just means the structure has five element, but it has another one pair on its center atom. SCl4 is called sulfur tetrachloride, it has 5 areas of electron density so it is in the group of trigonal bipyramidal and it has the shape of seesaw. Due to the 1 lone pa...

Ok, cool. Thanks now it makes sense to me. I was confused before because I did not undertand the concept of net charge on a molecule.

Re: Coordinate covalent bond?

Imagine I have ammonia, NH3 and Boron trifluoride, BF3. Ammonia has a lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom, and boron in the boron trifluoride only has 6 electrons not filling its octet. So in this scenario when the two molecules react, what occurs is the nitrogen is found to donate both of i...

How many different types of energy are there? When breaking an old leaf for instance, why is there a sound as it cracks? Is the sound a form of energy?

Why do orbitals beyond f- exist if there are no elements that can fill these shells up? A quick google search will show the g- and h- orbitals. How are scientist able to compute these without having directly observed them?

In the Syllabus sheet posted on the class website, it outlines the distribution of points that will determine our grade. One of the determinants "Weekly Online Discussion" which is worth 6 points per week for 5 weeks. Does anybody know what this refers to?
