Re: Fundamentals H21
I agree with the answer above, so overall the balanced chemical equation using those formulas would be 2C10H15N(s) + 26O2(g) as the reactants and 19CO2(g) + 13H2O(l) + CH4N2O(aq) for the products.

Re: Calculating Empirical Formula with Given Amounts of Each Element
I don't think that you need to use the 100g method but I agree with the above responses that it simplifies the values in the exercise. Say you had an exercise such as F11, where the amount of Oxygen is not stated. Using the 100g method makes it a lot easier to calculate the missing mass of oxygen. W...

Re: Balancing Equations [ENDORSED]
The stoichiometric coefficients in chemical equations must always be the lowest integer (whole number). In the example he gave in class, Prof. Lavelle multiplied the equation by two to get rid of the fraction. What he was left with were the lowest whole numbers possible. I don't think you are suppos...

Re: Question about final answers on tests
You could ask him or the TAs before the test to be sure, but just in case I would include the state in chemical equations, since he has put such an emphasis on them in class. Better safe than sorry on the first test!

Re: Rusty on High School Chem [ENDORSED]
I'm currently taking chem 14A with Lavelle and so far I've found his website modules really helpful in refreshing my high school chem knowledge. Also go to any office hours for him or the TAs if you want to spend some extra time going over things. Lavelle also announced peer learning sessions throug...
