I was taught to solve the problem first, and convert after, so that it doesn't become confusing before, or even during, solving for any calculations.

Dimensional analysis is simply the process of converting from one unit of measurement to another. The most basic example I can remember learning in high school is going from days to seconds. Here's a picture of my work. I hope this helps.

You can use different amounts of sig figs as you're working on the problem, however make sure you keep track of how many sig figs for your final calculation. If you are constantly rounding to 3 sig figs, for example, it is probable your answer may be inaccurate or far from the actual answer.
