A lone pair of electrons is similar to a bond of shared electrons as they are regions of electron density surrounding the central atom. So instead of being linear, the lone pair of electrons repels against the electrons that are bonded, pushing them away and resulting in an angular shape.

I don't think he has any more video modules. The last one was Heisenberg and we learned that a while ago.

Re: Midterm review sessions
It says on Monday and Tuesday (Nov 4 and 5) that there are review sessions for bonding/structures. There are 4 of them just for bonding/structures so does that mean they are all going to be the same or are they going to go over different stuff/different examples?

Re: Midterm
On the midterm review sessions page on the website, it says that on Monday, November 4, Professor Lavelle is going over past exam questions at 12-12:50 but that's when we have lecture. Does that mean that on Monday, we don't have lecture and it is going to be a review session? Can we go to other ses...

Is electronegativity and electron affinity the same thing?

Re: Exceptions to Orbital Rules
quresh3E wrote:What does that mean when he said they were half shell and full shell?
Half shell means when all the orbitals in the subshell have one electron. Full shell means when all the orbitals in the subshell have two electrons. So 3d^5 would be half shell and 3d^10 would be full shell.

Re: Are electrons always removed from the 4s orbital before the 3d orbital?
Is it because 4s is in a higher shell than 3d? Since 4s is in the shell further away from the nucleus than 3d, it would be removed first?

Re: example in class
So if ml = 0 then the electron would be in the 2py state? And if ml = 1 then the electron would be in the 2pz state?

Re: exceptions
One of the exceptions deals with the d subshell. For example, if you followed the pattern, Chromium should look like [Ar]3d^4 4s^2, but Chromium is actually written as [Ar]3d^5 4s^1 based on experimental results. This is because when you are filling up the subshell for d, 4 orbitals have one electro...

Re: quantum numbers
Your values for l are correct but you don't have all the numbers for ml. ml = l, l-1, ..., -l. So basically for n=3, the values for ml would be -2, -1, 0, 1, and 2. You have to include the positive and negatives values for every number you stated for l.

Re: Spin State
If we have a full shell, what would the quantum number be? Do they cancel each other and it is zero (that doesn't really make sense) or is it just the last spin state (+ or - 1/2)?

I always used 3.0*10^8 in high school but it's probably better to use the values from the constants and equations paper that is on Professor Lavelle's website.

Re: Work function units
1 J = kg*(m/s)^2. It is really helpful to convert a joule to its base units so that when you are doing calculations, you can easily cross out units and see what your final answer should be.

In the solutions manual, the answer for this question has 5 sig figs and I was confused on how they got 5 sig figs (the given value in the question has 6 sig figs, and the constants used in this equation (like Planck's, speed of light, conversion from ev to J) have either 3 or 4. I don't know if we ...

question on 1A.11
In the solutions manual, the answer to 1A.11 mentions Paschen and Brackett series and I was just wondering if that was something important that we need to know because it wasn't really mentioned in the textbook.

From what I've heard, from my TA and Step-Up, we don't need to know how to name the more difficult compounds but we should know common/simple ones like salt and water.

I think Professor Lavelle mentioned that Quantum Mechanics will be covered in the next couple of weeks. At least I hope so because I've only been working on Fundamentals this week.

When I went to Drop-In, the UA said that you should study what Professor Lavelle discusses in class and the modules rather than reading the textbook. The UA said you should only be using the textbook to do the HW and not to actually learn the concepts. I was reading the textbook to study and I notic...

Will we have to know net ionic equations for the test? I heard that we only need to know the topics that Professor Lavelle goes over in lecture but a net ionic equation was on a HW problem M9 so I was just wondering.

Re: Textbook
When I'm working on HW outside I usually take out the section that I need from my loose leaf textbook and just leave the rest. It is really heavy especially if you have other stuff to carry so it's nice to pick and choose what you need. It might be a little messy though but if you're careful I think...
