Re: Percent Yield
Usually you solve for the theoretical yield using the limiting reactant, which is then divided by the actual yield, then multiplied by 100%. The actual yield is usually given.

Writing Out Reactions
Do we have to eventually remember reactions and formulas off the top of our head? Or will they always be given in questions? Or like say we are given the reactants in word form and then do we have to write it out?

Re: Reading the textbook
Honestly I feel the same way when engaging in reading, but I find study groups make the experience more bearable. When I'm with a few committed friends I feel relaxed and motivated to finish the readings. Plus, if you don't get something you can just ask them on the spot to discuss key ideas.

Re: Showing Work for Limiting Reactant Calculations on Tests [ENDORSED]
I have a question about significant figures. What number do we base the amount of significant figures we use? Like in any problem. Usually we round the sig figs based on those given in the question, seen when numbers are given with excess zeros after decimal(0.500). Try to not round early in the qu...

While I'm not sure whether we get our midterms/final back, possibly Lavelle's attempt to preserve future test integrity, I believe once the TAs grade the smaller scale tests (tests 1/2) we get them back.

Re: When should one start rounding in a problem?
Makes sense, I wouldn't want to determine my empirical formula from a simple rounding off the top of my head. Thanks for the fast reply.

When should one start rounding in a problem?
For instance, when finding mass ratios I would divide an assumed amount of Hydrogen by its atomic weight; should I divide by 1 or its actual weight of 1.007 (I've seen both actions performed in a discussion)? These questions tend to deal a lot with assumptions so insight would help me a ton.

Why do we always need grams when solving a problem?
For instance, say when we are given milligrams, why don't we solve in that unit rather than convert to grams first?

How does one read sig figs?
I am a bit confused about where to start reading sig figs. For example, how many are in 500 vs. 500.000?(please answer this and provide short explanation)

Re: Final Jitters
Honestly the advice that an upperclassman gave me, doing a few problems a night(like 5-10, or build up to it), keeps me the loop during discussion and lecture. Simply start applying now so that the test seems less intimidating and you understand the lecture more when new material presents itself.

When are atoms lost or created?
I understand that atoms are not destroyed during chemical reactions, but is there a case where atoms are lost or created in a reaction, and if so, is it covered in chem 14A?(To prepare for the future)
