Re: 7E.3

You basically calculate the rate constants for both the catalyzed and uncatalyzed reaction. You then divide the rate constant for the catalyzed reaction by the rate constant for the uncatalyzed reaction. For part b, you do the same thing just at the higher temp.

Re: Transition State Theory

In transition state theory (TST) an activated molecule is formed during the reaction at the transition state between forming products from reactant. This differs from collision theory because collision theory applies only to gas phase reactions while transition state theory is a generalization to rea...

Re: Reaction Profile

Reaction profiles are constructed by comparing the initial potential energy of a reactants and the final potential energy of the products. These profiles are represented in the form of graphs that plot the energetic trajectory of a reaction. The graph will also include an activation energy hump. The...

Re: Problems

It's likely that the type of system isn't going to be the focal point of a thermodynamics problem. The problem will most likely involve reversible/irreversible expansion and changes in entropy, enthalpy, and Gibbs free energy.

What does it mean for a reaction to be Zero Order? I'm still a bit confused about it.

Re: Equation with dt

That is just a way to represent change in rate at certain points in time. We likely won't need to use it since it involves calculus.

He did have a buffer-type question on the midterm so I think its safe to say that he might have something of that sort on the final.

Re: Final- general questions

The final is going to be open-note, open book final. No monitoring will take place. Professor Lavelle said that it should be coming out today and I believe he said it would be 6 questions to complete in 3-4 hours, however that time limit isn't fully decided on yet.

This is simply another way of representing the concentration of A in terms of Ao. its a way to simplify the the subsequent calculations and keep them in terms of variables.

Re: 7E.1

The catalyst does not affect the deltaHnaught. The catalysts only lower the activation by providing an alternative energy pathway, therefore the standard enthalpy remains unchanged.

Re: 7.11

You can determine the slow step by looking at the reactants of the elementary equations. In step 2, you can substitute in NO + NO for N2O2 which, when you find the reaction rate, matches the given one.

Re: Pizza Rolls #5

For Part A, you have to add up three different delta S values to find the total change of entropy in the system. This includes deltaS for H2 container expansion, deltaS of Krypton gas for container expansion, and deltaS based on temperature change. Since entropy is a state function, this allows us ...
