It is based on the bonds formed and the bonds that are broken. I believe it is (but can someone confirm): the more bonds that are formed - the more exothermic; the more bonds broken - the more endothermic (generally, not always).

Another helpful tip is when looking at the cell diagram, the left side of both the cathode and the anode is the reactants and the right side of both is consequently the products. That is why anode is usually used as the product and cathode as the reactant!

I believe that when the states are the same, you can use commas in place of single lines; whereas, when the states are different, you use single lines.

I remember there being a table in the textbook that gives you relative bond strengths between different atoms.
