How do you determine the coordination number if we aren't given a ligand?

Re: Any tips on how to catch up in this class?
I would say doing the homework problems from the outlines, as well as going over testing material, attending plf/step-up sessions. I also love watching youtube videos because they guide you through the material.

I don't think it matters. I've seen people do both, in my plf sessions they do use the subscript though.

Lavelle said that Hybridization was not going to be on test 2. From what I remember the topics for test 2 will be intermolecular forces, hydrogen bonding, and molecular geometry. He also stated that sigma and pi bonds will be included as he will go over it during Monday's lecture.

Lone pairs repel; therefore, compressing and causing the angle to become smaller. For example, H2O has one lone pair that causes a bent shape with an angle less than 109.5.

Re: Short bond lengths vs long bond lengths
Shorter bond lengths are stronger because the atoms are closer to each other, therefore making it hard to break them apart. On the other hand, long bond lengths are weaker as they are farther apart.

Re: electronegativity trend
Electronegativity decreases as we go down a column because the distance between the nucleus and the electrons increases, meaning that the electrons are far from the nucleus.
