Yeah the number can only be -1/2 or +1 and at the review session they mentioned that its important to include the positive/ negative sign to signify direction of spin.

Re: Calculator rounding

What might help is when you are keying each number into the calculator, use all of the decimal places, additionally sometimes when you hit enter and use ans key in all of the decimal places because sometimes it rounds it up.

Re: Electron Configurations

We'll probably only need to know how to write out the electronic configuration, some of my friends in biochemistry use computer models/apps to draw out the orbitals and their orientation, I don't think we'll need to do that since it hasn't really been emphasized in class.

Delocalized electrons are electrons in a molecule, ion or solid metal that are not associated with a single atom or a covalent bond. Looking online it seems that delocalization can have slightly different meanings in different fields." In organic chemistry, this refers to resonance in conjugate...

Re: Ionization Energy

Ionization energy is defined as the amount of energy it takes to remove an electron. According to the periodic table, there is a trend where it increases from left to right because the atomic radius gets smaller in that direction, so electrons experience more attraction to the positive nucleus and a...

Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract electrons towards itself whereas electron affinity is the amount of energy released when an atom gains an electron.

Re: States of Matter

The states should not really matter for dilution reactions especially for the level of chemistry that we are doing for this class. So I don't think we need to factor in the states, unless it were something like enthalpy change and switching from sublimation (from solid to gas) and we need to calcula...

Re: Bonds

It depends on the type of elements that are bonding together in the reaction. Metal and non-metal then an electron is passed on from the metal to the non-metal so that they would each have a stable octet shell, in covalent bonding it is between 2 non-metals and the electrons are shared between the t...

A good practice might be to write out a table on the side for both the reactants and the products, I saw my TA do this in discussion. Also try and balance out the elements that appear the least FIRST, then work your way through the other elements!

Hope that helps (:

Re: When are atoms lost or created?

According to the law of conservation, atoms cannot be created or destroyed. I guess this is what happens in nature, however I think that with nuclear reactors we can convert atoms into energy. I don't think this will be covered in 14A or in our undergrad chem... cause that seems to be out of the sco...

We need to find the limiting reagent after balancing the equation according to their stoichiometric ratios. Avogadro's number or constant is basically the same constant number 6.0221 X 10^23. The way you should think about it is the number of atoms, within 1 mole of that particular atoms (its referring to the number of atoms) Note that different elements would have different sizes of each individual parti...
