I don't think he'll ever curve the final grade down. From what I've heard from my TA, he will only ever curve the final grade in people's favor.

Problem 9C.1 part d - naming the compound

For the compound [Co(NH3)5(SO4)]^+

What determines the order of the compound's name? I originally thought the answer was sulfatopentamminecobalt (III) ion, but I got the order incorrect. Why does the "pentammine" part go before sulfato in the name? Thanks.

I'm not too sure, so don't quote me on this. But won't the average be curved to a B- or something like that (if the average raw score is lower than a B-)? I've heard that in people's examples for how Lavelle will curve the overall grade, but I don't know for certain.

I think I have the concepts down pretty well from lecture and I do all of the homework problems. But, when I take the tests I kind of blank and I think it's because I get kind of nervous. I feel like it wouldn't be very efficient of TAs to check the points weekly, but I don't know for sure. Best to try posting weekly just to make sure. Although I have messed up a few times to be honest.

I really like watching educational chemistry videos like on khan academy and youtube, while working through practice problems. My attention span is pretty bad though too, and I can only do this for short periods at a time. But it's definitely good to start earlier!

Yes, unfortunately we got a class lecture cancelled previously due to the Getty Fire a few weeks ago, so Lavelle is still holding lecture on Wednesday to make up for that.

1A7b asks " When an electron beam strikes a block of copper, x-rays with a frequency of 2.0x 10^18 Hz are emitted. What is the wavelength (in picometers) of these x-rays?"

For my answer I got 150pm, but the textbook answer says 150nm. Is this a typo on the textbook's end?

Thank you, I see! So I should could technically use scientific notation for 0.0134, but it is generally not as often used for when the power of ten is (negative) 3 or more.

I'm still a little confused as to when I should use scientific notation or not. For example, the textbook solution for Fundamentals E.23 part a is 0.0134 mol Cu^2+, while the solution for E.23 part b is 8.74x10^-3.

Why did they decide not to use scientific notation for part a?

You should use the information given in the problem to determine the value with the lowest number of sig figs. Even if you use 1.01 for Hydrogen in your calculations, unless that info is given in the problem, use the lowest value sig figs from the original info.
