Re: What is the Octet Rule?
The Octet Rule states that elements usually bond so that each atom has a full electron shell (which is 8 electrons). This happens because atoms with a full electron shell are the most stable. Hope this helped!

Re: Study For midterm
I have been doing all of the assigned homework problems instead of just 5 to get a lot of practice with different types of problems that could potentially be on the midterm. Going to step-up sessions and workshops are also very helpful. Hope this was helpful and good luck studying!

I use c=3.00*10^8 as well! I'm pretty sure we can use either as long as the process/steps you use to get your answer is correct.

Yes a structure is most stable when its formal charge is 0! However this is not always possible, so the closer a formal charge is to 0 the more stable it is.

I strongly recommend doing all of the assigned homework problems on the syllabus for each section instead of just 5. It's good practice and gets you ready for different types of problems that could potentially be on the midterm! Good luck on your studies :)

Re: Tips for the Midterm
I recommend reviewing the Quantum World and attempting all of the homework problems assigned for that section in the textbook! Other peers have been saying that Chemical Bonding will be covered on the midterm as well, so once we are through covering that material in lecture, it would be a good idea ...

Re: Theoretical vs. Actual Yield
Actual yields will be less than theoretical yields due to side reactions that can occur, some products could stick to the sides of the reaction container, and impurities that are bound to happen during almost all chemical reactions. Hope this was helpful/answered your question!
