Re: Reading the textbook

The textbook does have a lot of extra information that may not be covered, but it's a good comprehensive guide and the practice problems it introduces are good to do before midterms and finals.

Your final answer needs to have correct sig figs for full points I believe, and I think there is partial credit for longer problems.

Re: Valence Electrons?

Valence electrons for the non metals can basically be counted just by going across the periodic table, for example; Li:1, Be:2, B:3, C:4, N:5, O:6, F:7, and Ne:8. And that pattern follows down the columns. For non metals, count across the periodic table. Each corresponding element should have the sa...

Re: Electronegativity

Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract electrons to itself when it is part of a compound. I think electronegativity decreases down a group and increases across a period. It is essentially how well an atom within a compound can attract electrons. Electronegativity decreases down group...

Re: Different forms of Energy

This is a pretty broad question. There are many different types of energy. Thermal, electrical, potential, kinetic, mechanical are all types of energy. They each have their different attributes, however, in terms of defining them as "energy." In other words, there are different factors tha...

The sun does not employ typical combustion reactions. Instead of oxygen, it uses hydrogen molecules to convert them into helium. The fusion reaction produces heat and light.

I recommend buying a 3D molecule model kit (there's also a free program that Professor Lavelle provides for us) It makes things a lot easier when learning shapes and arrangements.

Re: Geometry vs molecular shape

Geometry means how both bond electrons and lone pairs are arranged, whereas shape only refers to the arrangement of the bond electrons.
