Oxidation occurs at the anode and reduction at the cathode. You can also look at the standard potentials to determine which one will be which. Galvanic cells only work with positive standard cell potentials.

He didn't mean that there was a more efficient way. The short cut works but it does not provide you with an accurate understanding as to why. For our tests you will not have to worry about understanding the actual reasoning. The shortcut will work just fine

if the ka is smaller than 10^3 than you may use the approximation but if percent dissociation is larger than 5% then you have to go back and use the quadratic equation

The ideal gas law assumes: 1) no intermolecular forces, 2)no volume, 3)collisions are perfectly elastic (no kinetic energy is lost). These conditions are not realistic, thus why it is the "ideal" gas law.
