I notice that sometimes we will have a double bond instead of a single bond and in other cases we would keep all single bonds and draw out the other love pair electrons. I know that creating double bonds makes the molecule more stable, but how do we know when to do that?

Molecular mass deals with the sum of the amount of atoms in each element. if there are 8 Hydrogens then you want to multiply the mass of hydrogen by 8 since you have 8 Hydrogen atoms. You do this with all the other elements and at the end you add it all up to get your molecular mass.

Adding and subtracting have the same rule, after getting your answer you want to use the significant figure of the number that has the least set of numbers after the decimal. When you are multiplying or dividing you want to use the number with the least amount of significant figures.

In an example when you do have a fraction, you can always keep the numerator as the coefficient and whatever is the denominator, you can multiply both sides of the equation by that number so that both sides are balanced.

I have a little list that helps me with sig. figs.
1. All non-zero digits are significant
2. Zero's between non-zero numbers are significant
3. Leading zeros are not significant
4. Trailing zero's in a number showing a decimal point are significant
