Re: bond lengths
The bond lengths are not the same length in every molecule with a double bond. The lengths vary per molecule. There are a lot of factors that determine the lengths of the bonds.

Re: Which would have lower ionization energy?
Chlorine would have a lower ionization energy because the trend is that IE decreases as you go along a period and down a group. IE is the amount of energy it takes to remove the outermost electron on an atom. There is more IE for smaller atoms because their electrons are more tightly held together. ...

Re: Molecule size and ionic character
I look at the electronegativity difference of the two atoms to determine ionic character. The larger the difference is the more ionic character the molecule has. I don't think that the size of the molecule has an affect on the ionic character.

The one with the most covalent character would be the two molecules with the smallest electronegative values. The one with the smallest electronegativity difference is the answer.

Re: determining electronegativity
I don't think we need to know a way to calculate the electronegativity of an atom. We do need to know the electronegativity trend on the periodic table of elements. It also wouldn't hurt to know what the most electronegative elements are. They are fluorine, oxygen, and nitrogen. I like to remember t...

They are interchangeable terms. Other names for this include induced dipole-induced dipole. All of these terms are referencing the same thing.

You need to make sure that the overall formal charge of the structure is the same throughout each resonance structure and you need to make sure that the octet rules are being followed for each atom.

Re: lodon dispersion forces
Another name for these London Dispersion Forces is induced dipole-induced dipole bonds. These are the weakest bonds because they are temporary dipoles. This makes it easier for those bonds to be broken making them the weakest.

The most favorable structure can be determined by the formal charge of each atom of the structure. We would want as much atoms as possible to have a formal charge of zero.

I don't think that we need to memorize the electronegativity values for all elements. I think that he expects us to know the electronegativity trend which is the same thing as the ionization energy trend.

Re: Sapling Weeks 5-6 HW Question 2
I think that the issue here is that you calculated the incorrect formal charges. The equation for finding the formal charge is FC = Valence Electrons - (# of bonds/2 + Lone Pairs). If you were to do that for NH4+, then you should get a different numbers. For H it would be FC = 1 - (2/2 + 0). The FC ...

Only two electrons can have the same first three quantum numbers. No two electrons have the same 4 quantum numbers and this is because the last number, indicating electron spin, is different. The two electrons with the same 3 quantum numbers will have a different 4th quantum number.

In order to solve this problem, you would have to use Heisenberg's uncertainty equation which is. You would need to rearrange this equation so that you are solving for the uncertainty in the electrons velocity. This would just mean that v is greater than h/(4pi)(mass)(Position). Mass of an electron ...

The more electrons that there are the smaller the radius is. The protons are tight and are pulled to the nucleus. This is opposite for electrons. If there are more electrons, or if there are free electrons then the radius will be bigger.

I usually use all the digits, and wait to round at the end of the problem. I also keep track of the sig figs throughout the problem so that I know what I need to round to at the end of the problem. This is what I noticed my TA do as when he solved practice problems during our discussion section.

it is due to the size. We can only measure how light affects objects at the atomic level and this is because the baseball is too big to notice such a change. Also, the electron's position can vary and this allows us to measure the way light affects its momentum.

I am pretty sure that we do need to include the states of matters. It will never hurt us if we do. If a compound can be dissolved by water then it is aqueous. For the most part, we need to use out best judgement and any patterns that we notice during previous chemical reactions.
