Re: Ionic v. Covalent Bonds`
I believe that ionic bonds transfer electrons but the atoms remain bonded due to the resulting difference in charge between the two atoms.

I think it helps to think that the electrons that are furthest from the nucleus get taken away first.

It seems like the sapling for this unit is due on the Sunday of week 6, so we have more than a week left.

Sophia Wendin 2B wrote:Anions usually have a bigger radius than cations/the parent element because there's more electron repulsion, and cations have smaller ionic radii because there's less repulsion and Rb+ would have no electrons in the n=5 energy level.
Will anions always be larger than neutral atoms?

Actually I dont think you need the wavelength equation. Just do e=(c/wavelength)*plancks to figure out the energy of the photon, convert that to eV by dividing 1.602e-19 and you're good Just making sure, we have to do the conversion because e=(c/wavelength)*plancks gives us an answer in joules, rig...

Can someone explain what a diffraction pattern is exactly? Hi Lily, A diffraction pattern is a pattern that is caused by a wave. It usually looks like a bunch of straight lines. These straight lines ocur because waves can interfere with each other and cause them to "cancel" out or amplify...

The question says: The E.Coli bacterium is about 2.2 μm long. Suppose you want to study it using photons of that wavelength or electrons having that de Broglie wavelength. What is the energy E photon of the photon? What is the energy E electron of the electron? I'm not sure how to start the problem....

The negative represents the energy lost, it doesn't imply that the energy itself is negative.

Re: Negative sign in En expression
The negative sign causes your answer to be negative, representing the energy that the electron lost. When you use En for other stuff, you still have to use the absolute value of it because energy isn't negative.

This is a general question on the course; I just wasn't sure where to ask. My TA has said that Lavelle intends on...

If polarizability increases as an atom gets larger, would it follow the atomic radius trends? As in, increasing as you go down and left on the periodic table? Or is it a separate trend?

I think that you can think of the equation as representing a relationship that scientists have observed. If you change the equation, it would imply a different relationship. So, you can't change the equation itself.

Re: Kinetic Energy Problem
In general, the Uncertainty Equation will give you delta momentum, which will give you delta velocity. You can use the delta velocity to find kinetic energy because kinetic energy = 0.5(m)(v^2). Remembering this general pathway can help in figuring out what direction to go. Hope this helps!

I think that, technically, there isn't a minimum speed for electrons (I could be wrong). However, electrons can't be faster than the speed of light.

I wanted to add on that the reason you can't use f=ma for quantum world calculations is that when you measure electrons, you affect them. If you know the exact position, then you will affect their momentum, and vice versa. This is the Uncertainty Principle. So, an equation like f=ma that requires ex...

Hey, just wanted to add a tip that it's easier to think about moles if u think about doing the same thing, but with "dozens". For example, finding how many "dozens" of people live on Earth can help in thinking about the steps you'll need to take because, once you know the theoret...

I don't think anyone mentioned it here, but the professor has a periodic table on his website. In general, I wouldn't round values for molar mass because it could lead...

I agree with the answer posted above, but just to answer the post's specific question, ratios should be whole numbers. Whenever you get a ratio that has decimals, it is either a sign that you should round or multiply/divide by a factor in order to get to a ratio with whole numbers.

Like the other replies say, the difference between your answer and the answer in the solutions is close enough that it doesn't matter, but I had the same problem and it turned out that I was using 1.01 for the molar mass of hydrogen, because that was what I had memorized in high school. However, the...
