Re: adding H+ and H2O
I was really struggling with this on the Sapling, but I found a kind of shortcut for it:
1. balance whatever is getting oxidized/reduced
2. add double the amount of OH- needed to balance the oxygen
3. add as much H2O on the other side of the equation as you need to balance the hydrogen

You were given the value of Cp, so you have to use the equation deltaU = nCvdeltaT. To get the value of Cv, use Cv = Cp - R. Then, plug this value into the deltaU = nCvdeltaT. Hope this helps!

You have to find the moles of NaN3 and then multiply that by (3 moles N2/ 2 moles NaN3). This gives you moles of N2 which you can plug in for n in the PV=nRT equation.

Re: Sapling Week 3/4 Question 18
For this question, it's asking for q first so you need the equation q=nCpdeltaT (you should be given the value of Cp). To solve for deltaU, you have the equation deltaU=nCvdeltaT. You can derive Cv from Cp using the equation Cv=Cp-R.

Re: Sapling #14
The reason option a cannot be a hydrogen bond is that the H in the acetone molecule does not have a slightly polar charge. That H is bonded to a C, which makes that bond a dispersion force. However, the O in the acetone molecule of option c does have a slightly polar charge, attracting the slightly ...

Re: Bonding
For hydrogen bonds, it's between hydrogen and fluorine, oxygen, or nitrogen. London (dispersion) forces are present between all molecules. You can tell if a bond is covalent or ionic using the electronegativity chart that Dr. Lavelle showed us during lecture.

My TA said it will be formatted the same way in terms of zoom and Respondus running at the same time. I know that the questions will be more conceptual rather than asking us to calculations like in midterm 1.

I think it would help me with the next midterm and final to be able to see the solutions, but I also heard that we won't be able to.

I usually listen to music when I study, but I found that with chemistry, it was easier for me to focus on the lectures and the homework when my music wasn't playing.

I've been worried about my grade as well. I think as long as you study as much as you can and attend step-up sessions/workshops for clarification, you should do well on the next midterm and the final.

Hi! I spent the day pranking my parents! I put up scary decorations all over my house (fake [censored] handprints and footprints, skeleton ghosts, etc.). Then, we had a Halloweentown marathon :)

Re: The equation
If you're confused about Rydberg's, know that if the photon is emitted, n (initial) should be greater than n (final). If the photon is absorbed, it is the opposite.

Re: spectral lines
It depends on whether light was emitted or absorbed. If absorbed, n1 (initial) would be a lower number than n2 (final). If emitted, n1 would be a greater number than n2.

I did the practice problems as well. I think they helped a lot more than I anticipated, but if you haven't yet, I recommend going over your lecture notes to re-familiarize yourself with how to solve the easier problems because the practice problems are more complex.

I agree, it's probably a rounding error. Also, make sure you're using parentheses when you're solving for the work function because depending on what calculator you're using, the numbers may be slightly off.

The only problems we have done so far with Heisenberg's indeterminacy is to solve for velocity, so I'd assume that we would only be tested on this during the midterm.

One of the UAs will be teaching the step-up session and they usually just work through problems, step by step, relating to the week's topics.

It depends on your TA. Because we take the midterms during our discussion sessions, the TAs are monitoring us, so your TA will probably be able to answer this question.
