Re: Octet Rule
Like what Sophia said, calculating the formal charge and counting the number of electrons around each atom helps in finding the electrons in the middle. I like to see how many valence electrons are needed to fulfill the electrons in the middle and count the bonded electrons as those needed electron...

Re: axial vs. equatorial
When lone pairs occupy equatorial positions, it only repels two axial bonds at 90º, whereas if the lone pair occupied the axial position it would interact with 3 equational bond's. Therefore, lowest energy is achieved when lone pairs are in equatorial position because there is less repulsion. I sec...

Re: Homework question Sapling
If it were linear and the two lone pairs cancel its forces out, then the angle between the lone pair and the bond would be 90 degrees, and electron repulsion wouldn't allow that. When there are four regions of electron density, the electron geometry is tetrahedral and the bond angles are 109.5 degr...

As there is an increases in electronegativity you would move up diagonally and to the right on the periodic table.

Re: coplanar?
atoms in a molecule are in the same plane, for example a 3D atom in the same flat region.Place the molecule flat on a table, everything flat is coplanar and would be at the same height.

Lone pairs are also considered as regions of high electron density, and must be accounted for when determining the electron arrangement. They are however not taken into account when determining the molecular shape, as only the positions of the actual atoms in the molecule are considered. Extremely ...
