That is an interesting question considering there were no multiple answer questions. My guess, there probably won't be any partial credit this time around.

Re: eV to Joules (Defining these Units) Question

Thankfully the equation sheet has the conversion.

Re: spectral lines

Your equation seems to be indicating that the electron is going from n=2 to n=1, because the equation is set up so that "Change in energy = final energy - initial energy". Also, it's helpful to remember that when the electron goes up an orbital the electron is absorbing energy and when it ...

Re: Participation Points [ENDORSED]

Do you still get credit for your posts regardless of whether your answering a chemistry specific question or a more general administrative question?

Re: How to remember what v is in equations

I try to remember that the "v" that represents frequency is not actually a v. It is really the Greek letter nu. As such, I draw it differently than a regular "v" by making it more slanted and curly.

Re: Midterm Prep

Hi. The syllabus says the test questions are similar to the practice problems, so I would definitely spend the 3-4 hours it takes to do those.

Re: Midterm and Compound Memorization

Hello, Dr. Lavelle mentioned that we'd learn about naming compounds later on, but we don't need to worry about that for this upcoming midterm. All such necessary information would be given. I'd just advise you to remember the formula for butane (C 4 H 10 ) and know what the products of a combustion...

Amplitude

Is amplitude used only in the wave model? Also, does increasing amplitude increase the amount of energy of the light and thus brightness?

Midterm and Compound Memorization

Hey, does anyone know if we will have to know the molecular formula or mass of specific compounds from their name alone. I know that on the homework questions, there are sometime compounds given that we are expected to know the molar mass of (like 3-methyl-3-hexanol). Will the midterm provide more i...

Re: Textbook Questions and Midterm

Okay, so the questions regarding 1E and 1F are off the table for this midterm.

Textbook Questions and Midterm

Up to which textbook question on The Quantum World outline, should we study for the midterm. In other words, which questions will applicable given that the midterm covers only part of The Quantum World unit. Thanks

Re: Molar Mass and Molecular Mass Difference?

The difference is in the units. Simple:

1. molar mass is in grams per mol
2. molecular mass is in amu (atomic mass units)

How do I know how many sig figs to use?

If there are multiple values in a prompt, each with a different number of sig figs, how many sig figs should my final answer have?

Re: Do I need to do very single textbook question on the syllabus?

They are not required grade wise, but doing all the questions has really helped me iron out the kinks and memorize each chemistry concept.
At least read over all the questions and make sure you know how you would approach it if you were to complete it.

Nomenclature

For the upcoming midterm, should we be able to derive a molecule's structure from the name alone? In other words, will there be prompt's that don't mention the chemical structure of a compound and we will have to figure it out from nomenclature rules alone?
