I have the same problem, as this is my first time in a chemistry class since sophomore year of high school. What I did was to watch all the modules on Lavelle's website as well as completing the pre and post assessments. This really helped me solidify my base for chemistry. I also skimmed through a ...

Re: e density
Yes, each bond and lone pair is a region of electron density. However, double and triple bonds both count as a single region of electron density since it is just a type of bond, not 2 or 3 bonds.

Re: Required knowledge for test/midterm [ENDORSED]
I think all the things we are expected to know are given on the formula sheet and if it isn't on there it will likely be given in the individual question which requires it. Otherwise I would just make sure to know how to use each thing and what it is used for and you should be set.

Re: Tips for Staying Focused
Personally, my biggest obstacle regarding focus with all online school in general is the lack of structure compared to in person classes and lectures. I had a lot of trouble with this at first especially with the asynchronous lectures such as in this class. I have since solved this by giving myself ...

Re: studying for exams
I believe all equations and formulas we need to know will be on the sheet that we print out along with the periodic table. I mostly use the sapling hw questions to guide my preparations and if I can do all of those I feel pretty solid on my knowledge for upcoming exams. If not, I always just use the...

Yes, cumulative, and I am assuming it will be the same format as the midterms and be multiple choice only with no free response.

Re: 14B Enrollment [ENDORSED]
When it says class closed, does this mean I can still apply for the waitlist? It only shows 9 lectures for me and all of them just say closed so I'm not sure I can even get on the waitlist at this point. Also, will more sections open up for this week's enrollment period? If anyone knows that would b...

Try chewing a specific type of gum or flavor of gum while you study, and then chewing the same gum when you take the test. This can help you recall the same information from when you were studying and also give you a little peace of mind that reminds you of the preparation you put in.

Personally, I find it the most helpful to re-watch the lectures that he has conveniently located on CCLE. I usually rewatch these, especially on the topics that I know I am a little iffy on, and then go back to the homework from that section and review those problems. Good luck!

Re: Electronegativity chart for Midterm
I believe for the midterm all we need to have printed would be the periodic table and the formula paper. If there is anything regarding electronegativity I would assume either the values would be given or it would be about comparing elements in which case you can just use the trend of the periodic t...

Re: midterm 2: knowing compounds
Yes, we havent really been lectured on the naming of compounds yet so I wouldn't worry about that too much for midterm 2. I think once he lectures on it or once it is on the study guide for the test then we will need to know it for that coming exam.

Re: Memorizing oxidation numbers
The easiest way I have found to do this is using the groups of the periodic table. Knowing that in group 18 an atom is full, how many groups away it is tells you how many electrons it will need, basically its oxidation number.

Re: Midterm 2 format?
Midterm 2 should be very similar as far as format and delivery goes, it will once again be all multiple choice and we will use the same respondus as well as a separate zoom camera setup. I think it may be a little harder since we are starting more material that we have not covered in high school che...

Agreed, VESPR was covered after the last lecture that he said would be included on the midterm so I wouldn't worry about it as far as studying for the midterm. I would make sure you know it by the final of course but for the time being you should be good.

For me, having a schedule is a major key to being able to study effectively. I look at my day the night before every night and find a block of time where I can just devote myself to studying and/or homework. I make it seem like an appointment because if I am just siting at home, it is easy to just g...

Feeling pretty good, it took a couple of weeks to kind of get everything organized and into a rhythm but now that I am getting used to the class, it is much more manageable. All the resources that Dr. Lavelle makes available for us are great and I am just beginning to make use of them and I regret n...

The easiest way I have found to keep track of all the trends is that they all increase across periods and down groups except for atomic radius. Atomic radius is the only one to decrease across a period and increase down groups (an arrow pointing down and left.) Electronegativity, electron affinity, ...

I was wondering the same thing, and talked with one of my friends who is in this situation. He said that the main thing is just that it is time consuming so as long as you are organized and on top of the work in both classes, it is not too bad conceptually. He actually said that he draws a lot of co...

I would really recommend the step up sessions. I find it hard to really concentrate just by myself with the book and having a live session to go to and watch really helps me pay attention and makes certain that I really work with the material rather than just skimming through the textbook.
