Re: Textbook Question 3F.3

The last one, CCl4 is nonpolar. It has a symmetric tetrahedral shape, so its dipoles cancel out one another. That's why it is only London Dispersion and would not be listed for dipole-dipole IMFs as they are cancelled out.

Re: Textbook Question 3F.15

The main reason why AsF3 has a higher boiling point than AsF5 is because AsF3 has dipole-dipole IMFs due to the bonds being covalent. Whereas AsF5 has only London Dispersion IMFS because it is a nonpolar molecule. If you draw it out you'd be able to kind of tell the molecular shape and derive the ki...

Re: Ionic v. Covalent Character

Covalent character in an ionic bond is when either an ion has high polarizing power or high polarizability. There is more covalent character in an ionic bond if the cation is small because its polarizing power is bigger, due to the concentration of positive charge being in a smaller area. So for exa...

Re: electron repulsion

There is electron repulsion present in atoms with lone pairs or bonded pairs. The electron repulsion is strongest between lone pair electrons and the least amount of electron repulsion is present between bonding pairs.

Re: Focus Problem 3F.1

They're asking you to just list what IMFs are present in each of the molecules. All of them will have London Dispersion of course. So the best way of identifying any other ones would be drawing their lewis structures because you'll be able to see how/which atoms are bonded together.

Re: grade worries

I mean as long as you're on this site that has a bunch of answers to any question you can ask, I hope most of your worries can be assuaged. The last midterm was actually a lot more straightforward than I thought it would be. Conceptual questions weren't that hard to understand at least for me. Altho...

Re: Textbook Problem 3f.5

What the question wants you to see by looking at their lewis structures, is they also want you to understand what intermolecular forces are at work in the bonds when you draw them out. For part b, there's dipole-dipole happening in the diethyl ether, but in butanol it's not just dipole-dipole. There...

Re: Nomenclature

It's not a requirement but it does make things easier to memorize certain polyatomic ions because they are usually used in questions a lot. The main ones that are used in tests that I had to memorize in high school were ammonium, acetate, carbonate, phosphate, hydroxide, sulfate, sulfite, nitrate, n...

Re: atomic radii

Just keep a relative idea on what the periodic trends are. Based on the concept questions that Lavelle put in the last midterm, they're pretty straightforward. This is probably to reduce confusion on the test and make it easier to grade.

Re: How to Treat Anions and Cations

Cations usually occupy the left side of the periodic table, all of the alkalis, because they easily lose their electrons. The anions are closer to the right side where all of the nonmetals are. The electronegativity is affected by this because it increases as elements move to the right where the non...

Re: Midterm Partial Credit

I was wondering if anyone knew if any of the questions from Midterm 1 were going to be discounted or if our score now is the permanent score. I'm pretty sure our scores are going to be permanent. Professor Lavelle and the TAs spent a while going over questions before distributing our grades to make...

Yeah I agree, as long as you keep your total points above 450 you should be pretty solid for getting an A.

Yeah Professor Lavelle sent an email saying we had an 86% average and a 5% boost for installing respondus. Which overall is a pretty decent average.

Re: 4s and 3d

I think it's because the electrons have to fill in all of the spaces of the 3d orbital before they can move on to the 4s orbital. The 4s orbital is in the next energy level.
