Re: Expanded Octet Question
All the replies to this post were super helpful. I wasn't really able to understand the concept until I read the explanations here. Thank you for asking this question because I do not think that I would have found the correct words for the question.

I honestly do not know how to tell, but I could not think of any other ways to try to draw it.

Re: Sapling #3 Bond Angle
Just in case you were still having trouble with this one, I got 85.1 degrees fro mine. Many of the replies before mine explain how to kind of get to that value, but just in case there was some miscalculation.

I had the exact same problem! This was also one of the last problems that I had to answer and it was really stressing me out. But no worries, I'm sure many of us were confused by this one.

Hi I think the previous replies explain the process on how to get the solution, but just so that you can compare the answer should be 85.1 degrees I believe.

You are one of the only posts about number 13, and thank you for that, I really was confused with this problem and it seemed like everyone just kind of new it. I literally could not figure out the shape, so I am super grateful you asked this question.

Looks like you got this sorted out already lol. I literally just went through the same process trying to get the correct drawing. I had forgotten about the lone pairs that O had and kept getting the problem inncorrect.

Also I believe that for this specific compound the empirical and molecular formula are the same.

He probably knows from doing them so much and for so long. I can tell by looking at the column that they are it. On the top of the periodic columns there are numbers that will label the column.

This was a really good question lol. I would always play around and see which atoms would work where. I didn't know there was an actual reason why one was in the middle. This post really helped

If you google periodic trends and click on the first image that pops up it is pretty good. I just always reference one of those images and its easier to understand and read for me.

Re: Polar/ Nonpolar
If you can tell based off of shape that is a very good way to figure it out, but it is always good to check with a other method if you can. I would say that It would be good for a quick guess, but you always want to be absolutely sure on some problems.

Nitrate is (NO3)- and nitrite is (NO2)-. Between the two its just a difference of an oxygen. I can only assume that -ate and -ite have something to do with telling how many oxygen there are supposed to be

In the feedback that sapling gives you it tells you all of the equations or whatever they are called. its No3 - and the such. I do think I saw someone else mention trying to memorizing them on another post but I am not so sure about that. I know i didn't know the equation when i read the name lol.

Its because p electrons are farther from the nucleus and thus have more energy while the other one is closer and so it has less.

My TA showed us a picture of a periodic table that had big arrows in all these directions that showed how a trend would increase or decrease within the table. If you know the yourself I recommend drawing your own, or you could always google it.

Sapling hw question old
Hey yall I had a problem with this hw question on sapling . When a metal was exposed to photons at a frequency of 1.23×1015 s−1, electrons were emitted with a maximum kinetic energy of 3.60×10−19 J. Calculate the work function, Φ, of this metal. I calculated it and got 4.55 x 10^19, and it said that...
