all we know officially is that 50% is passing (C-) and thats from the syllabus. but we can assume an A is 93+ and and A- is 90-92

I think sig figs are important because it deals with the precision of the numerical answer. It's important to estimate the final result so this is where sig figs come into play. Plus, dealing with a bunch of decimal places can be complicated the further you get into the problem.
