Hi! how can we tell how many sites a ligand will bond to (for example the difference between a monodentate and a bidentate?) And how much will we need to know for this final exam?

Not totally related, but for some of those having a problem with answering on sapling, also make sure you don't put spaces. I had tetra-ammine dichloro copper (III) chloride and they didn't take it until I changed it to tetraamminedichloro copper (III) chloride.

I usually like to think of it by looking at the Lewis structures. If there are lone pairs, then they tend to be bases since those lone pairs will often contribute to a bond between that ion and another ion. On the other hand, if an ion doesn't have a full octet (for example, if it has a central Boro...

I think also a good way to think about it is as if the energy from all the electrons are distributed between more atoms, which lowers the energy magnitude of the entire molecule. it's also important to remember that resonance structures represent a singular molecule.

I believe that the light/color you see when you shine light on an object is actually a separate process from the photoelectric effect and has more to do with how our eyes interpret light; the object isn't necessarily continuously emitting light. Hope that makes sense!

The empirical formula should just be the simplified version of the molecular formula. The ratio of each element should stay the same so essentially you would be reducing the formula to the lowest whole number integers if that makes sense. For example, C4H8O4 would be reduced to CH2O.
