This can be demonstrated by the equation PV=nRT.
If you rearrange the values, you can get the equation: P = nRT/V.
Thus, since V (volume) is on the denominator, an increase in V would decrease P (pressure) and vice versa.

Re: Midterm 2
I will definitely do all the sapling problems, but will review the textbook questions to study. I believe some of the exam questions are directly from the textbook homework, so it is definitely a good resource.

Re: Sapling number 17
For the example you provided, BF3 is non polar because the polarity/dipole of the 3 B-F bonds all cancel out each other. In the NF3 molecule, the lone pair does not allow this to happen and thus the molecule will overall have a charge and be polar.

Re: Midterm #2
Midterm 2 will be during our discussion during Week 7. In terms of difficulty, it seems like there will be more questions, but each question will be worth less points. The TAs and UAs said that this means there probably won't be partial credit for this midterm.

Re: Curve?
I've heard that Lavelle has adjusted grades in the past by a few points depending on class averages. However, given that our average on the first midterm was so high, it doesn't seem like there will be any drastic grade adjustment.

I don't think we will be able to see what questions we missed, but Dr. Lavelle did say that most of the difficult problems came from the book. Maybe looking at those problems might help?

Re: # of electrons
The number of an electrons in an atom is equal to its atomic number. For example, Oxygen has an atomic number of 8, so it has 8 electrons. However, a cation will have less electrons (positive charge) and an anion will have more electrons (negative charge).

I would recommend going to Dr. Lavelle's office hours if you had any questions and also attending some of the workshop and step-up sessions. Those have been very helpful for me and their worksheets are pretty comprehensive.

Some of the larger 12 point questions had partial credit, which could have been awarded if your answer was close or if you showed that you understood the concepts.

Dr. Lavelle said that many of the difficult problems were from the homework, so maybe it would help to see if the answers you had matched with the hw answers. Other than that, I don't believe you'll be able to find out what you missed.

According to the formula and constant sheet on the class website, c will always be the speed of light for the purposes of this class. However, there is another constant "C^2" that is called the second radiation constant.

Yes, the Lyman series involves an an electron moving down to the n=1 energy level or up from the n=1 level. However, you cannot assume that the value is for n(final), as the problem could be describing emission or absorption.

The de Broglie equation is only applicable for objects with mass, as the equation involved momentum which is mass * velocity. The speed of light equation only applies to light, such as the emission from atomic spectroscopy or electromagnetic radiation.

The number of sig figs in your answer will definitely matter for in-person/written tests, but for the multiple choice exams, my TA said it is unlikely we will have questions where we will be tested for sig figs. For example the questions won't have the answer choices 3.14 and 3.141.

I went to my first workshop this week and it was very helpful. The UA went over the lecture materials for that week and then provided us with a worksheet. The worksheet had problems I hadn't seen before, so it was a good way to get more exposure to the types of problems we might get on the test.

If the energy of the photon is greater than or equal to the energy needed to remove the e-, then the electron will be emitted. Otherwise, the electron will not be emitted.
