Re: Temperature Question
It doesn't really matter when the problem asks for delta temp (ONLY FOR DELTA TEMP THO... I think).
Let's say a system goes from 25 C to 30 C. The difference in temperature is 30 - 25 = 5.
When you convert the two from C to K, it looks like this: (30 + 273) - (25 + 273) = 303 - 298 = 5.

It really depends on the wording for this kind of question, but: If you're spending energy ON the system, the work done to the system is positive. When you compress a piston on the system, YOU are spending energy to do work on the system, which means the system is receiving that energy. That means t...

An example would be compressing a piston to decrease the volume of the system. The volume decreases, the work done TO the system is positive, and therefore the system's energy gains a net positive energy.

Bond Length
I wasn't really clear on this from the lectures, but what is the significance of bond length in determining the stability of structures? And what does a shorter bond length really entail?

Re: Sigma and Pi bonds
Do we need to know the details of the difference between sigma, pi, and delta bonds?
Or just this?:
single bond = 1 sigma
double bond = 1 sigma 1 pi
triple bond = 1 sigma 2 pi
quadruple bond = 1 sigma 2 pi 1 delta
Or just this?:
single bond = 1 sigma
double bond = 1 sigma 1 pi
triple bond = 1 sigma 2 pi
quadruple bond = 1 sigma 2 pi 1 delta

Re: What are orbitals?
To my knowledge, orbitals are more representations of where the electron can be found at any given time. For example, with an s orbital, there's a sphere of space where the electron can be found, whereas with the p orbital it's more of a peanut shape. Is that all we need to know conceptually as far...

Re: positive and negative ion
The negative ion would have a larger radius because in this case, the nuclear charge stays the same (if they're the same element). The only thing that would be changing is the number of electrons, meaning the radius would be bigger. I understand the size of the radius correlating with whether it is...

What exactly determines the strength of an acid/base? Didn't really understand if there was a concept that I needed to know for this or there was an equation to determine this.

The fluorine atom has a higher number of protons in its nucleus (meaning there is a higher charge that attracts electrons). Because of this, the attraction would be higher :)

Re: Sapling #28
With this specific set of ions, we can see that all of them have the same number of total electrons. The only difference is their nuclear mass and charge. The more protons the atom has, the more attraction it holds on the electrons, which brings them closer to the nucleus (like a magnet). :D Hope th...

Re: N reaching infinity
Physically, it is impossible for an electron to reach n = infinity. As long as there is a "distance" between an electron and an atom, there will be some attraction, though it would be EXTREMELY small. So unless there is a way to reach a length of "infinity" between an atom and an...

Re: Intensity vs. Frequency
For something like a photon, the intensity would refer to the the number of photons sent at a target or in a certain direction. The frequency would refer to how many crests or troughs pass through a certain point in a wave. The amplitude, just in case, refers to the height of the crest or trough.

In addition to offsetting the electron's velocity, it could also interact as in bind with the electron, absorb the energy of the electron, pull it in its direction, etc. It would directly affect the experiment's results.

Calculate the energy of the proton, subtract the kinetic energy of the election from the energy of the proton, then you have the threshold energy :))))

I think maybe the electron wouldn't really move from the surface, but it would still be physically separated from the other atoms/electrons (it wouldn't be bound). Then again, that's a pretty rare scenario, for the energy of the photon to match the threshold energy exactly haha :DD
