Sodium propionate (NaC3H5O2) is used as a food preservative. What is the pH of a 0.020M solution of sodium propionate? The pKa of propionic acid (C3H6O2) is 4.88.

Since I know the pka do I just find the Ka and use that to solve? Or since its for C3H602 I have to find the reciprocal of the KA value?

CHEM 14B Class Structure

I have heard that chem 14b has a similar structure to chem 14a but will the lecture also be asynchronous on Bruincast or will they be live. Just planning out my classes and trying to figure out what times are better for me and if I could stack a class on chem 14b if it is asynchronous.

Re: Midterm Curve?

Yea I think that any of the tests are not curved but on the Syllabus it says that you only need 250/500 points to have C- in the class so the straight scale for our letter grades may not be the traditional grading scale.

Re: Test Scored for Midterm 1

I asked my TA about it and he explained that they will be released sometime this coming week. There some errors in the tests on a couple of versions and they want to fix it.

Re: Finding Wavlength

I don't think you could use those for the same objective. The photoelectric effect is used for finding energy of light, which does not have a rest mass. The de Broglie's, however, is used for electrons and other particles with a rest mass. Therefore, I don't think you would get the same answer, nor...

Yea that's what I was confused about.

Finding Wavlength

Could you find the wavelength of an object using the photoelectric effect and De Broglie Equation and it will give you the same thing?

Rydberg Equations vs Dr Lavelle's Empirical Equation

Will the empirical equation that Dr. Lavelle used in the lecture on Friday be able to solve the same problems that the Rydberg equation can?
