Re: Ionization Energy

Atoms try to achieve a full outer shell, so it takes the most energy to remove an electron from a full outer shell and the least to remove an electron from an atom with only 1 valence electron.

Orbital reference sheet

Does anyone know if we'll get a reference of the pattern and order of the orbitals on the exams? Or should we work on memorizing the patterns?

Re: Application of Shrodinger's Equation

I'm having a little trouble understanding it conceptually, is it calculating the total energy of all electron in an atom? Or just one?

Do we ever use 0? Is there ever a situation in which an electron has no spin?

Re: Rydberg’s Constant

So does the equation have to be rearranged depending on if it is emission or absorption? Or do we just plug in the values into the variables depending on the scenario?

Re: Amplitude

While frequency and wavelength are related, amplitude is just referring to the brightness or intensity. I think it does affect the height of the wave, but not frequency or wavelength.

From the 7th level, it can fall back down to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th level, giving it 6 possible lines.

Will we likely have to derive these equations during the midterm since they're not on the equation sheet?

Lyman and Balmer series

What is the difference between the two series? Are we expected to memorize their respective wavelengths?

Do electrons release energy when they are exited and jump energy levels, or when they fall to lower levels?

Re: Energy Levels

Electron levels are helpful in visualizing the concept that their energy is measured discretely, not continuously. There are "steps" of energy levels, and the energy level they fall from corresponds to the energy released.

Equation masterlist

Is there a list anywhere on here or the chem website where it has all the equations that we'll be allowed to refer to during exams? I feel like I keep missing equations in my notes.

Re: Intensity v Energy

From my understanding, intensity of light has to do with its amplitude, and it measures how many photons are present. Energy, however, is related to frequency of the wave, with the equation E=hv, with h being Plank's constant and v being wavelength.

2.8 can most likely be rounded up, but if the number comes out closer to, for example, 2.5, multiply everything by 2 to get clean numbers
