Re: Formal Charge of the Same Element
I believe that each atom should have its own formal charge because each atom on the compound can have different numbers of bonds and valence electrons.

Re: Electronegativity Table/Chart in Lecture
I do not think it is required to memorize the specific values for electronegativity, but to memorize the trends of it on the periodic table and its relation to ionic/covalent character. I remember during the lecture he said that if we had to determine if a compound has ionic or covalent character, h...

I believe that l=4 would be equivalent to higher orbitals, but in this class we are only dealing with 0,1,2,3.

Re: Excited vs. Ground State
The concept of electrons being excited to a higher level relates to electron configuration because an electron that is excited means that there are added electrons. In an electron configuration, this would be represented by the valence electron being in the next orbital.

Re: Advice for studying
Personally, I study in short intervals of about an hour because taking breaks are important for retaining information. Everyday I review bits of my lecture notes so that the information stays in my head. In addition, I recommend attending every UA session even if think you are fine. Doing problems w...

Orbitals describe the location of where an electron can be found. As of right now, there are more orbitals after f, but we are not required to learn that.

Re: Advice for Midterm Studying?
One of the methods that I am using for studying is to review all the lecture notes, doing all the textbook problems, and going to all the UA sessions and doing their worksheets. UA sessions help a lot because you are able to interact with other students and they can answer questions live.

Re: Definition of "Work"
Work is the amount of energy that it takes for an electron to be ejected. According to the photoelectric experiment, the energy of a photon must be greater or equal to the work function, which is also referred to as the energy needed to eject an electron. You will know when to apply the equation whe...

Re: finding Ek
Another way you can find the energy of the photon besides (E=hv) is through the photoelectric formula which is E(photon) - E(ejected electron) = Kinetic energy of electron. If you were given the wavelength of an ejected electron, you would have to use c=( λ )(ν) and move the variables around to ν=c/...

For one of my problems in discussion, we were tasked to find the molecular formula of caffeine, which included the elements CO2, H2O, and nitrogen. I know that nitrogen exists as a diatomic element, so it is written as N2. But when I am finding the moles of nitrogen, do I treat it as N2 or N? All re...

In quantum mechanics, a photon is a particle of light that harbors energy. Unlike classical mechanics, light is treated as a wave, but in this case, a photon is a particle.
