Ya usually I fill in the dots by only putting one on each side and then going around a second time so you I the right number of paired and unpaired electrons!

Re: Participation Points [ENDORSED]
I think we do get points for every post we make. I don't think we can actually see how many points we have but ya I think if you only submitted three posts instead of 5 you would get partial credit but I'm not sure.

Reading this post was so motivating for me because I also want to go to medical school. Thinking about the road to getting there is super intimidating and reading what you had to say made me realize that even though it's tough, its a long process that will prepare me for the future!

Hi Marina! First, I want to say that everybody is also nervous to some extent and that you're not alone! :) One of the main things that helps me to not be so nervous is honestly to just study the material until I feel comfortable with it. One of the reasons why I get anxiety about school is that I f...

Hey, my TA sent out an email this week saying that we can use our phone camera instead of having to use a separate webcam! I would probably reach out to your TA first though to make sure!

Re: How are you studying?
Hi! So basically, I watch the lectures and then do the problems in discussion. If I realize I'm having trouble understanding a topic covered during a lecture or trouble answering a practice question from discussion section on my own, I either watch the lecture again or try to understand why we appro...

Re: When are electrons excited vs ejected
Hi! So my understanding is that an electron is excited when it receives energy from an incoming photon and because of this is "excited," ultimately making the electron jump to a higher energy level. Sometimes, when this energy from an incoming photon is high enough, the electron is so &quo...

Mass conservation in atomic spectra experiments?
Hey guys, I know Dr. Lavelle has been explaining how the law of conservation of mass connects to different topics we're covering but I'm struggling to connect it to when an electron is so excited that it ultimately ends up "disconnecting" from the nucleus of an atom. Does anyone have any i...

Light Emission
Hey guys, I don't think this is something that we need to know but since different photons can make electrons jump to different energy levels that eventually end up returning to ground state, is there a correlation between the color of light that is emitted and the energy of the photon? I know this ...

I don't think that there's a preference in which form you use. Either should be good in my opinion as long as you make sure that you're being careful when you're using that notation when doing calculations!

Re: When should I start looking at sig figs?
I would also say that you should really only worry about sig figs when you're writing down your final answer. I keep every decimal that I can in between calculations since that helps me be more accurate and then once I'm at my answer, I make sure my final answer and the numbers used in the question ...

Re: Calculating number of moles of an element
I also think that we pretend we have 100 grams in total because it makes the calculations easier because when you're first learning how to figure out empirical and molecular formulas, pretending that there are 100 grams in total just makes it easier to approach each problem since you start each prob...

Re: How do we find the amount of oxygen in combustion?
Since we know that mass is conserved in chemical reactions because of the Law of the Conservation of Mass, you can determine the amount of oxygen in combustion by looking at a balanced chemical equation that involves combustion and determining how many number of moles of oxygen there are to begin wi...
