Re: Determining Reaction Order
You can determine reaction order of a substance by using the data where only the concentration of the respective substance changes. For [A], we can use Experiments 1 and 2, since [B] stays the same. In Experiment 1, the [A] is 18.00mmol/L and the reaction rate is 5.94 mmol/L*s. In Experiment 2, [A] ...

Do a test run of Lockdown by opening it up before your exam just to check for any pending updates. If you don't see anything, you should be good to go!

Re: electron configuration
A orbital that is half or completely filled is at a lower energy level than having one with 8 electrons and 2 in the s orbital, so d10 is preferred to reach the lowest energy state possible.

I remember seeing some problems exactly from the textbook on Midterm 1 so I'll probably be focusing on going through those problems after finishing Sapling.

Unfortunately, there won't be any audio-visual modules for midterm 2. They were very helpful though, so I hope Prof Lavelle considers integrated them in his future courses!

Yes! Prof Lavelle made an announcement on his website that states that the last eight bullet points and all of Outline 3 will be tested.

Radicals
I was watching the Wednesday lecture and noticed that there were many examples of radical lewis structures given. I understand that radical structures don't have enough electrons to make a complete octet so they're highly reactive and have a short existence but what else do we need to know beyond th...

Re: Taking Bio and Chem simultaneously
I have a friend who is taking 7A and like others have said, it's definitely a lot more of a heavy workload compared to Chem 14A. I think your ability to manage both courses depends on what other courses you're enrolled in (an easy GE maybe?) and what other commitments you have. If you choose to take...

Nuclear charge increases across a period because as you move across, the number of protons increase while electron shielding remains the same.

A lot of the above responses already covered the jist of it so I just wanted to drop an additional resource: https://stack.dailybruin.com/2020/02/05/class-fill-ups/ This is a graph from the Daily Bruin that allows you to find how quickly a class filled up last winter since it's likely this year's en...

Re: Midterm
I'm pretty sure there is no curve for the midterm or this course. As for partial credit, I think Prof communicated that we will be received partial credit for certain answer choices in some larger problems. We're not sure when the midterm will be graded, though, since there was in error in a questio...

Generally, atomic radius gets smaller moving up and to the left of the periodic table as a result of effective nuclear charge. For ionic radius, an atom that has lost an electron (+ charge) is generally going to hold onto its remaining electrons a lot tighter (smaller radius) while an atom that has ...

Our TA is asking us to enter Zoom through our phones at the time of our discussion and lockdown through our laptops. I think you can log in at your normal time and they'll give everyone 5 minutes to get set up.

Scratch Paper for Midterm
Hello!
I noticed in Prof Lavelle's latest email that we can use the back of the periodic table and constants sheet after it's been checked by our TA for scratch work during the midterm. Does that imply that that's the only scratch paper we can use or can we have other blank sheets?

Re: The Midterm Topics
After doing many of the textbook problems, I notice that not a lot of them require knowledge beyond what we've learned (like nomenclature and writing equations from diagrams) so I think we won't be expected to know more than the basics. The only section that had some tricky problems like that was on...
