Re: Determining Reaction Order

You can determine reaction order of a substance by using the data where only the concentration of the respective substance changes. For [A], we can use Experiments 1 and 2, since [B] stays the same. In Experiment 1, the [A] is 18.00mmol/L and the reaction rate is 5.94 mmol/L*s. In Experiment 2, [A] ...

Hydrogen Bonding

If an N,O, or F atom hypothetically has 2 lone pairs, is it capable of creating 2 hydrogen bonds, one for every lone pair, or just one hydrogen bond. In other words, does the number of potential hydrogen bonds for an atom depend on the number of lone pairs that atom has?

This unit is definitely more conceptually-focused than the previous one. I don't think there should be any major calculations since we're expected to know most of the introduced equations conceptually.

I don't recall what specifically is covered in those chapters but what I would do is go through each bullet point in the outlines that'll be on the exam make you're solid on the objective. If you're able to explain/answer the outline bullet points, then you should be in good shape.

Midterm 2 should cover the last 8 points on Outline 2 and then all of Outline 3, which does not include anything regarding VSPER.

Do a test run of Lockdown by opening it up before your exam just to check for any pending updates. If you don't see anything, you should be good to go!

Re: electron configuration

A orbital that is half or completely filled is at a lower energy level than having one with 8 electrons and 2 in the s orbital, so d10 is preferred to reach the lowest energy state possible.

Unfortunately, there won't be any audio-visual modules for midterm 2. They were very helpful though, so I hope Prof Lavelle considers integrated them in his future courses!

I have a friend who is taking 7A and like others have said, it's definitely a lot more of a heavy workload compared to Chem 14A. I think your ability to manage both courses depends on what other courses you're enrolled in (an easy GE maybe?) and what other commitments you have. If you choose to take...

Nuclear charge increases across a period because as you move across, the number of protons increase while electron shielding remains the same.

Generally, atomic radius gets smaller moving up and to the left of the periodic table as a result of effective nuclear charge. For ionic radius, an atom that has lost an electron (+ charge) is generally going to hold onto its remaining electrons a lot tighter (smaller radius) while an atom that has ...

Hello!
I noticed in Prof Lavelle's latest email that we can use the back of the periodic table and constants sheet after it's been checked by our TA for scratch work during the midterm. Does that imply that that's the only scratch paper we can use or can we have other blank sheets?

The only section that had some tricky problems like that was on...
