Re: Mid-quarter Check in
It is going really fast! I feel like the quarter just started, but we are already planning our schedule for winter quarter. I hope I can keep myself motivated for the rest of the quarter, but it is really hard to do so with online classes. Wishing we were on campus!

Re: Valence Electrons
To find an element's valence electrons, I count the number of columns on the periodic table. But, remember to skip the transition metals. So for example, the element Boron is in the 3rd column, meaning it has three valence electrons. This also makes sense because Neon is in column 8 and having 8 val...

P, S, and Cl are all exceptions to the octet rule (8 valence electrons)

Re: Expanded Octet
During a step-up session, the UA told us to know P, S, and Cl as the exceptions to the Octet rule. There are definitely more elements that are exceptions, but for this class these three are the only ones we need to know.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
Students who have taken the Chem14 series have told me to use my first pass for enrolling in chemistry. Though there may be open spots left for your second enrollment pass, it may not be for the lecture/discussion that fits your schedule. I will use my first enrollment pass for Chem14B and for LS7A....

If you click on "your posts" under quick links on the right side it says how many posts you have made. I think on Thursday this week they will update our grades for posting on Chemistry Community.

I think they will post exam scores after everyone takes it. I heard some answer choices will have partial credit since they might partially be correct.

1) Yes the midterm will be during your TA discussion time. 2) My TA is allowing us to use our phones to show our work and desk space while taking the exam. 3) I heard it is all multiple choice questions as well 4) The link to the Respondus Exam will be found on CCLE at the start of your discussion s...

For most problems using 3.0 x 10^8 m/s resulted in the correct answer. But for exams, it would be safer to go with the more precise value given on the formula sheet.

When I had to use Respondus for another class, the timer was set for 25 minutes for a 20 minute exam. The 5 extra minutes were given for the Respondus setup. I hope it is the same for the midterm!

Re: Homework Problem 6
Since the electron is returning to a lower energy level from n=5, the lowest it can drop to is n = 1. For each level it drops, there will be a spectral line that will appear. To find the wavelength range, you know that since the electron is returning to a lower energy level it can be anywhere from n...

Re: Lyman vs. Balmer series
During a step-up session, the UA told us a good way to remember the difference between the Lyman and Balmer series.
Lyman goes Lower (n=1) and Balmer has the letter B which is the 2nd letter of the alphabet so (n=2).

Re: Sapling Q 4 Part 2
I used the equation Energy (photon) = Work + Kinetic Energy To find the maximum number of electors ejected, you would set the Kinetic Energy = 0. The energy of each photon is equal to the work function since the energy of work is given in J/Photon. Now you can calculate the number of photons equal t...

I agree with everyone else! I would use a scientific/graphing calculator for those problems. I would also add parentheses to the numerator and denominator just to be sure the calculator understands the function.

Re: Electron not emitted even for high intensity light
Hi! I was also a bit confused on that. I think increasing the intensity of the light would increase the number of photons present, but the each photon does not have enough energy to eject an electron. Increasing the number of photons does not allow them to add up all their energy. Each photon still ...
