Re: Chem BL

I'm currently taking 14B, planning to take BL next quarter and take a break from regular chemistry classes and take chem14c starting fall next year (fingers crossed it'll be in person) I'm doing the same thing! Does anyone know if it's difficult to secure a spot in 14BL? I wondering if I should enr...

Re: Sapling Weeks 3 and 4 HW Question 15

I keep getting the wrong answer for this question :( How do you calculate the volume change for this problem since we have to solve for volume using PV=nRT and not another volume is given?

Re: Sapling Week 3 and 4 Question 14

Should n equal PV/RT, not RT/PV? Since to isolate n you need to divide PV by RT, not the other way around.

Re: Sapling Weeks 3,4,5 Grade Error

I agree with the comments above! It typically takes a little while, I've noticed, for the CCLE grade to update, so I wouldn't worry too much about it! If it's been a couple of days and it still has not updated, then I would reach out to your TA.

It typically takes about a week! And last quarter I found my grades under the "Exam and Homework Grades" tab on MyUCLA (but I'm pretty sure it's also posted on CCLE)!

Re: Midterm 1 Reactions

I agree with most of what's been said above! I finished a bit early, so I had some time to go over my answers, but ended up overthinking all of them (leading to changing a couple answers) which I think is going to end up harming my grade :(

Yes, I treated myself to some ice cream too! Coconut milk chocolate ice cream from Trader Joes to be specific, I'd highly recommend for any Westwood people :)

Enthalpy of Formation vs Enthalpy of Combustion

Hi! Can someone tell me if the formula (products-reactants) is the same for calculating enthalpy of combustion as it is for enthalpy of formation?

Re: Midterm: Outline 3

Yeah, I agree. Dr. Lavelle hasn't explicitly told us, but I would say bullet points 1-7, as well as bullet points 11 and 19 will probably be best to know for the midterm.

Re: Sapling #8

So for part c (or the last question), you will want to use the equation you listed (but use CS2 instead of S8): ΔH=nCS2×ΔH∘ Since 399 kJ of heat is absorbed, this will be the value for ΔH. Then use the value of ΔH∘ given in the problem, which is +358.8, and divide this by 4 because there are 4 moles...

Re: Sapling #8

I'm working on this problem right now, and I'm still trying to figure out part c. but for part b., you need to convert the 173 g to moles, then from there you multiply that value times the delta H value divided by 4 (because there are 4 moles of carbon in the reaction). Hope that helps! When I figur...

Midterms for 14A were not open book, they were proctored using Respondus and over Zoom! If you go to Dr. Lavelle's 14B class website, there is a link to the constants and equations sheet and the periodic table, which we are allowed to have on all tests! Here's what it looks like:

Re: When to use ICE chart?

Yes, I agree with the post above. A good way that I use to determine if an ICE table is necessary, is to look for key words "initial concentration" and "equilibrium concentration", and usually that will give you a pretty good hint if an ICE table is necessary.
