Re: Final Jitters

Does anyone know how to calm down your anxieties before you take this final? Since having test anxiety can be very distracting while you're trying to study or even while you're taking the test itself. Open to any tips:) If I can go back, I would definitely not sleep for two hours, because by the en...

Re: Do I need to do very single textbook question on the syllabus?

If you look at the syllabus, there are multiple practice problems Professor Lavelle recommended, so I think doing all of those will prepare you more than enough for the midterm!

I would remember them just in case (I also remember memorizing them as a mandatory assignment for my past high school)!

Re: Molecular formula from shape

You can't figure out how many double bonds a structure has just by looking at its chemical formula (that's why we draw models)!

Re: Is ionic or covalent stronger?

I think generally covalent bonds are stronger. Take salt and water for example, NaCl, an ionic compound, dissolves in H2O, a covalent compound. You can infer that the ionic bonds in NaCl were weak enough to break in an aqueous solution.

Re: Fractions

I know this was kind of addressed in a question someone asked earlier but I just wanted to ask if we would be marked down if we left the stoichiometric coefficient as a fraction? I know different professors prefer different things so I just wanted to clarify to see if it would necessarily be seen a...

Re: State in chemical reactions

Will we be penalized for not including the state of each element in the chemical reactions? It's easier for me to visualize the formula without the extra information but I don't know if that's something that's important to have in the answer. In my high school class, I would always get docked off 0...

Re: Stoichiometric Coefficients

Can we assume that a problem with the stoichiometric coefficients already given in the chemical equation is balanced? In other words, would there ever be a scenario where the stoichiometric coefficients are given, but the equation isn't balanced? Yes! Some given equations can be tricky because they...

Re: Balancing Equations --> #18 in Module

If a hydrocarbon is being combusted, the chemical equation with be the hydrocarbon + O2 forms CO2 + H2O. Butane is a hydrocarbon so this equation will apply and all you have to do is balance it. If there is also nitrogen or another element in the molecule being combusted, other products may form. Y...
