Hi! I think the theory is mainly for helping find the position of the electrons - I feel like understanding the concept is most beneficial as opposed to how to apply it when it comes to what might appear on the final!

I don't think how you write it matters too much, especially since the final is multiple choice. I just recall that Professor Lavelle wrote OH2 in lecture to show that oxygen was what was donating electrons, not Hydrogen.

Also, the idea of a strong and weak acid or base is related to their ability to conduct electricity. If an acid or base conducts electricity strongly, it's a strong acid or base. If the acid or base conducts electricity weakly, it's weak.

The number of valence electrons can be quickly found depending on which group that the element is in on the periodic table. So, atoms in the 1st group have 1 valence electron, while atoms in the 8th group (noble gases) have 8, and don't forget to exclude the d block when you count the group!

Cations are positively charged and anions are negatively charged. I remember this personally because to me anion sounds like onion and I have had a "negative" experience with onions. Weird way to remember, but it works for me!

I believe the larger the difference in electronegativity, the more electronegative the bond is, and for it to be polar, this difference must also be large.

One way I find it easier to stay focused at home is by setting a certain amount of time to do work, and designating specific breaks in between! It’s easier for me to concentrate for 30 minutes or whatever the time may be when I know I can have a 15 minute break afterward! :)

Like the other posts say, degeneracy means that you have multiple orbitals with the same energy level, so with the one electron system, there are no shielding effects - therefore, all of the shells are energy-degenerate.
