Re: Overall reaction order
If all of the reactants in a reaction are zero order then yes, I believe the overall equation itself would also be zero order, since it is the sum of the order of the reactants. The rate law then would depend on k. I can't imagine, however, that this would happen very often, although it is possible.

Q is not equal to K because K is specifically the ratio of products to reactants when the reaction is at equilibrium, hence the name equilibrium constant. Q is also the ratio of products to reactants but it implies that the chemical reaction is not at equilibrium.

Re: Saying Thank You to Dr. Lavelle
Professor Lavelle, This has been one of the few classes that I have taken at UCLA, even including in-person classes, that has provided the amount of support and extra time going over topics outside of class. All of the resources put in place to help us succeed, including the many review hours and TA...

Staying Motivated
At the end of this quarter, more so than other quarters, I found myself struggling to stay motivated and focused on my classes. Especially for this class, with the lectures being prerecorded, I found that it was a little too easy to let myself fall behind. Does anyone have any advice or tips that ha...

My understanding of a salt is that it is formed through an acid-base reaction and is composed of an anion and a cation, with the cation often being a metal and the anion being a nonmetal.

While finals week is always stressful, it's been nice seeing Christmas lights go up, and wrapping presents and getting excited for the holidays has definitely relieved some of that typical finals week stress. I'm definitely excited for the end of the quarter and I hope everyone has a safe and relaxi...

Re: Winter Break
During the quarter I usually take pretty messy notes from lecture and the textbook, and over winter quarter I plan to rewrite my notes, or at least the essential concepts. This will help me stay refreshed on the material, and will also give me something to reference should I need to in 14B.

I also was super rushed towards the end of the exam. I was feeling good about the test overall, but after guessing on the last few questions, I'm definitely worries about my grade. I do feel a little better knowing that other people struggled with this!

I don't believe we will need to directly calculate Ka and pKa, but it would be best to know the relationships between the two, and understand how they relate to the strength/weakness of acids, as explained above.

Re: [OH-] and pOH difference
My understanding is that pH refers to the concentration of H, or more specifically the concentration of H3O+, whereas pOH is the concentration of OH-. To calculate pH, use pH =-log [H3O+] and to calculate pOH, use pOH = -log [OH-]. To if given one and asked to calculate the other, you should be able...

Re: Why is CO (carbon monoxide) monodentate?
In my understanding, CO is a monodentate ligand because when one of the lone pairs becomes a bonding pair, it repels the other lone pair, which becomes too far away to create a second bond.

The definition I have in my notes from lecture is that a ligand is any compound that interacts with a transition metal to form a coordination compound/transition metal complex. I'm not sure how this relates to the biological definition but I hope this helps!

Re: Chelates
The definition I have in my notes is that chelates are complexes containing ligands that form a ring of atoms, including the central atom. Monodentate ligands cannot be chelating ligands because it is necessary for the ligand to bond more than once in order to create this ring structure. Thus, only ...

Re: Grade Cutoffs
I may be wrong, but I believe that the exact cutoff or grade breakdown depends on how (or whether) the professor curves the grades at the end of the quarter, based on how most students did, which will likely depend on the final quite a bit.

I find that its been hard to stay focused as the quarter is almost over. I also got a bit discouraged in this class because I did not do as well on the midterms as I had hoped or thought that I did. Regardless, I plan to study extensively for the final and hopefully end the glass with a good grade.

It says on the syllabus that out final will be 1 hour and 30 minutes, so I'm curious whether it will need to be proctored in the same way as the midterms, and if there will be flexibility on when we can take it, based on our various schedules. Re: Dipole representation on midterm 2
My understanding of what was said in lecture is that the arrow will be pointing towards the more negative side. This is because the electrons are being pulled to this side, which is what gives that part of the structure a partial negative charge, due to the negative charge that electrons have.

Attendance/participation is not factored into our grade, so the only issue with missing discussion section would be missing the information presented by the TA. My TA posts the slides on his CCLE site, so I haven't found this to be a problem.

I imagine if a large portion of the class was struggling than there might be extra credit offered, however, the average on the first midterm seems pretty high so I'm not sure that there will be. I haven't heard anything definite, this is just my best guess.
