Re: Halloween!!!

Happy Halloween everyone! My roommate and I dressed up as The Cheerios from Glee and sat on the couch and watched Grey's Anatomy. And ate too much candy :)

Re: Balmer or Lyman Series

It might be helpful to study the figure in section 1A.3 of the textbook. It displays several spectral lines and associated wavelengths and lists what series they are in. The Lyman series consists of UV radiation, which has smaller wavelengths that are more in the 100s while the Balmer series consist...

Re: Midterm Prep

I have been reviewing textbook problems and doing the audio-visual modules. I have heard that the worksheets from the UA sessions are good too, so it might be helpful to try a few problems from those.

Re: How to relax

I like to meditate/take some time to clear my mind so I don't spend all of my time worrying about school. I also like to watch tv and do skincare stuff :)

Re: Printouts for Midterm

There are two print out sheets that we are allowed to use- the periodic table and the formulas/equations page. My TA said we can use the backs of those pages during the exam as scratch paper but we can't write on them before the test. I think they are checking at the beginning to make sure we haven'...

Re: Test Accuracy

The exam will be multiple choice, so sig figs and rounding hopefully will not be too much of an issue.

Midterm monitoring

Does anyone know how strict monitoring will be in terms of talking? When taking exams at home it helps me to read the questions aloud and I am just wondering if we could get flagged or in trouble for it. I wouldn't want to be suspected of cheating when I'm just reading the problem or solving aloud.

Re: Partial Credit for wrong sig figs?

I also had this question because I sometimes struggle with not knowing what decimal place to round to/how many significant figures are required in an answer.

Re: Sapling Q10

The propyl magnesium bromide does not effect the calculations. For this problem, the calculations only really deal with the 2-butanone and 3-methyl-3-hexanol because the 2-butanone is the limiting reactant and the 3-met-3-hex is the product.

Re: Molar Mass Stated in Sapling HW

This just means that the molar mass falls within the range of 100-120 g/mol. You multiply your answer by 2 for the actual mass, and if the value is within the range, then it is likely accurate.

As many others have stated, Kelvin is more commonly used, but Fahrenheit and Celsius may also be used too. Many problems I have seen that involve Fahrenheit or Celsius have to do with conversion.

Re: Whole Number Stoichiometric Coefficients

Stoichiometric coefficients should be whole numbers. If a coefficient is a fraction, all coefficients should be multiplied by the denominator of the fraction so they will all be whole numbers.

Sig fig guide

Not sure if this has already been asked but I remember my TA mentioning there being some sort of guide or resource from Dr. Lavelle to help with significant figures. Does anyone know where I can find it? I really need to review the rules.
