Is H2O not included in cell diagrams?
And I'm pretty sure H+ is included (right?)?
Would OH- be included in the cell diagram?

Midterm 2 content
Are there any equations we need to know for midterm 2? Like I understand all the rules and trends we need to know, but I wasn't sure if we need to know Shrodingers Equation or any other equations...like are there going to be calculation problems?

Re: Determining Number of Orbitals
Okay so this confused me a little as well but I think I understand part C at least. When n = 2, it can have the sub shell of p (so l = 1) or s (so l = 0). Within these subshells, there are different number of orbitals. n=2 and l = 0 only has the 0 orbital (so we have +1). Then, for n =2 and l =1, th...

Oxidation numbers, I believe, are the total number of electrons that an atom either gains or loses when forming a bond with another atom

Re: Periodic Table Trends
Hi! I know people have already answered the question, but I was struggling with keeping everything straight too with all the trends. If you're having this same issue I found it really helpful to print out a copy of the periodic table and draw arrows for all the trends. I used this doing practice tex...

Re: Ionic Bond vs. Hydrogen Bonding
Ionic bonds are stronger than Hydrogen bonds, which means it takes a higher boiling point to break the bond. So, if I am correct, the stronger the ionic bonds between the two atoms the higher the boiling point, and since hydrogen bonds aren't very strong those molecules tend to have lower boiling po...

Re: HW Question
The answer would be London dispersion forces and dipole-dipole forces only due to the London dispersion forces always being present, and the polarity of the molecule caused by C and H which means dipole-dipole forces are present.

In addition, by definition delocalized electrons are free to move across more than one bond, whereas localized electrons are tied to atoms as lone pairs or in set covalent bonds.

Hi! I also did not do too well on Midterm 1. Some things I'm doing differently for midterm 2 are really making sure I learn as I go along, for example, when new material started to be introduced, I printed out periodic tables and made one for the trends, one of the lewis dot structures, one of the e...

Just wanted to confirm that the only way to change to pass/no pass is through my.ucla! Dr. Lavelle has not stated anything specific regarding midterm scores yet. I know some TA's said scores would be posted after the last discussion section took the exam, but I also heard that there is a possibility for partial credit, which might mean the grading will take a few days.

Re: Rydberg constant
I am not sure why it is not consistent, but the reason for the two different numbers is the units it is in. When R=3.28984 x 10^15 it is in Hertz (given on the equation/constant sheet) but the number that appears on sapling (1.097 x 10^7) is in meters. Hope this helps!

Re: Is c always the speed of light?
As far as we have learned (unless someone correct me if I am wrong), c is a constant that will always be the set number equal to the speed of light. A constant is an unchanging number, thus c will always be the same value and will always represent that value as the speed of light. The only possibili...

Calculating deltaE for non H-atoms
Dr. Lavelle discussed in Friday's lecture how deltaE = - hR/n^2 can only be used when looking at H-atoms (if I misunderstood this statement, please correct me). Would we ever be asked to solve for a non H-atom? If so how would we go about doing that? Is there a different formula that accommodates to...
