Re: Midterm

After reviewing your notes I think the best thing to do would be to work through the practice problems in the book and the problems that the TA gave you during discussion section.

Re: Balancing Chemical Reactions

It doesn't matter which order you balance them in but it will be easier if you start by balancing the element that appears the least first.

Re: Volume vs. Density

Volume is how much space an object takes up whereas density is how many atoms are inside of that volume.

Re: Average Molar Mass [ENDORSED]

There's a lot of helpful content on Youtube and Khan. I you have any specific questions you can just ask them here and you'll probably get an answer really fast.

Re: No. of sig figs

If they don't specify how many they're looking for then find the number in the problem with the least sig figs and use the same.

Re: Which is the limiting reactant?

You are correct, the reactant that has the least moles will always be the limiting reactant. Once the limiting reactant has been used up, whatever is left over from the other reactants will be excess and cannot be used.

Re: Light Intensity

Each photon interacts with one e-. If I understand it correctly then increasing the intensity of the light only increases the number of photons but the energy per photon has not increased so no individual photon can reach the threshold needed to begin ejecting electrons.

What's on the test?

Will stuff covered in class on Wednesday week 4 be on the exam? Also will we only have 50 minute to take the test or will we be given more than our regular class time?

Re: Memorizing Masses of electrons, protons, and neutrons

During my discussion section my TA said that certain stuff would be given to us on the exam so I don't think we are expected to memorize values like these.

Re: Faster than light

Your calculations are probably off. I don't think anything can be faster than the speed of light You should probably try rechecking your calculations or make sure you used the correct formula.

Re: Work Function

The work function is the minimum amount of energy needed for light to eject one e- when shined on metal. In the photoelectric experiment they found that only high frequency light has the ability to eject electrons. Even with high intensity, low wavelength light cannot eject e-. This is because one p...

Re: Converting Between Energy and Photons

You can use the equation E=hv to find the energy of a single photon. Once you've figured out the energy of one photon, you can multiply that by the number photons to find the total energy.

Re: Advice from a Medical Student [ENDORSED]

Thank you for writing this. It was a really inspiring post to read. You're right, this course does feel really intimidating at least to me. I appreciate the advice that you gave. I intend on following all of it. I hope this course goes well for me.

Re: How to find my posts

At the top click on Quick links and then there should be a drop down menu where you can find your posts. This was really helpful. I tried going back to the thread I was on earlier and I couldn't find the post that I left so I was wondering if I forgot to submit it or something. I used your advice a...

Re: Culinary Chemistry

That's so cool. I find it fascinating how stuff we're learning in the classroom is already affecting us in the real world before we even graduate. Because you took this course you better understand why blending hot mixtures is bad where as someone who's never studied chemistry only knows blending ho...
