Re: Conceptual question about the nernst equation and gibbs
The Nernst equation relates the equilibrium potential of a half-cell to the concentrations of the reactants and products and the temperature of the system. The equation is commonly used to calculate the potential difference of an electrochemical cell under non-standard conditions. The spontaneity of...

Re: inert electrodes
Inert electrodes, also known as non-reactive electrodes, are electrodes that do not participate in the electrochemical reaction of the cell. They are added to a cell diagram when one or both of the half-reactions in the cell involve a gas or a metal ion that can be reduced or oxidized at the electro...

Re: Relationship between order and number of steps in a reaction
The order of a reaction describes the relationship between the rate of the reaction and the concentration of the reactants. It can be zero, first, second, or higher order. The order of a reaction is experimentally determined by measuring the change in the reaction rate as the concentration of one re...

Re: Order vs Molecularity
In chemical kinetics, order and molecularity are both concepts used to describe the rate of a chemical reaction, but they have different meanings: Order refers to the relationship between the concentration of a reactant and the rate of the reaction. It describes the dependence of the rate of the rea...

Re: What is the difference between heat and enthalpy?
Heat and enthalpy are both measures of energy, but there is an important difference between the two: Heat is a transfer of energy that occurs between two objects or systems as a result of a temperature difference. Heat is a process variable, meaning it depends on the path taken to transfer energy be...

Re: Forming and breaking bonds
Enthalpy is positive for breaking bonds because energy is required to break chemical bonds. Breaking a bond requires energy to be supplied to the system, and this energy is absorbed by the molecules involved in the reaction. The energy required to break a bond is known as the bond dissociation energ...

Re: acids and bases
In a chemical reaction, the conjugate acid is the species that is formed when a base accepts a proton (H+). To identify the conjugate acid in a reaction, you can follow these steps: Identify the base in the reaction. A base is a substance that accepts a proton (H+). Determine what happens to the bas...

For (a) you would want to: 1) NH3 + H2O <-> NH4+ + OH- then do an ice table I 0.057 M 0 0 C -x +x +x E .057 x x ignore x since Kb= 1.8e-5 is small Then do K = x^2/.057 and solve for x which is equal to the concentration of OH-. then do -log[OH-] = pOH and you can find pH from 14-pOH. Hope you can s...
