Midterm 2011 Q4 - Partial Pressures and K

The question says that the partial pressures of each reactant (PCl3 and Cl2) is half that of the product (PCl5). In the book the partial pressures, after calculations is equal to 0.4 for the PCl5 and 0.2 for PCl3 and Cl2. Is it also right if I said that the partial pressure for PCl5 was 0.2 and 0.1 ...

Homework 13.35- Calculating Standard Cell Potential

It says to determine the equilibrium constant

Mn(s) + Ti2+(aq) <> Mn2+(aq) + Ti(s)

The answer book says that Ti2+(aq) + 2e- > Ti(s) is the cathode E = -1.63V and
Mn2+(aq) + 2e- > Mn(s) is the anode E = -1.18V

Why is is like this?

Homework #8.71

For number 71, I do not understand why both reaction 2 and 3 are multiplied by 3. I understand that reaction 2 is multiplied by 3 to get 3 moles of NADH but why reaction 3? And why do we divide the total Gibbs free energy of reaction 2 and 3 by reaction 1's Gibb's free energy?

Lewis Structure of Hydrogen Sulfite

For #55b on the homework the Lewis structure for the hydrogen sulfite ion (HSO3^-1) has the hydrogen in a single bond with an oxygen atom. Why can't the hydrogen have a single bond with the sulfur atom?

Valence Electrons

For number 85 in chapter 1 it asks for the valence-shell configuration, including the outermost d-electrons. When we count the number of valence electrons, do we usually count those in the d-orbitals even though it is in a lower shell? For example does cobalt have 2 or 9 valence electrons since its ...

Wavelength of an electron in an atom

In the course reader, it says an electron in atom has a wavelength of about 10^-12 m. Is this the minimum wavelength of an electron in an atom or is it a constant value?
