Winter 2014 Q3D

Part D asks to calculate E° of cell and the solution shows E°anode-E°cathode. I am confused....isn't it E°cathode-E°anode? Can someone please explain this to me.

Idean's 10 Page Review

I see on a previous topic the link to the one page handout Idean gave out during his review session but, correct me if I am wrong, didn't Idean say there was a 10 page review packet he made? I can't seem to find if/where he posted that.

Equilibrium constant in pre equilibrium approach

Can someone explain how you are able to use the equilibrium constant even though it's not at equilibrium?

Balancing with OH

When balancing a redox reaction in a basic solution, can you balance the equation with the OH at the end and treat it like an acidic reaction until then?

Re: Identifying anodes and cathodes

Look at the reaction and see what is being reduced and what is being oxidized! The cathode is being reduced and the anode is being oxidized.

Gibbs Free Energy Definition

I understand how to calculate free energy and how it favors being negative but what in itself is free energy? Why is it "free"?

Re: Closed System

By definition, an adiabatic system is one where there is no gain or loss of heat. For a closed system that is the only means of energy transfer because no matter can be added so therefore q must always equal zero.

Using Bond Enthalpies to Calculate ΔH(rxn)

When looking at bonds that are broken and formed in a reaction in order to calculate the bond enthalpies, is the only way to determine which bonds are broken/formed through drawing the Lewis structures?

Fraction Coefficients [ENDORSED]

When balancing a chemical equation, is it okay to leave the coefficients as fractions or should they all be whole numbers?

Order of filling Molecular Orbitals

When filling the molecular orbitals for a molecule with a nuclear charge less than 8 (so the pi bonds are lower energy than the sigma bond in the P orbital), if you have three electrons total in the P orbital will they fill with one in each pi bond and one in the sigma bond or will the third pair wi...
