The maximum work is equal to delta G when temperature and pressure are constant because that is the definition of delta G. Temperature must be constant when looking at the equation for delta G which is [deltaG=delta enthalpy - temperature *delta entropy]

Why is it that the molar heat capacity for an ideal gas at constant pressure, Cp, is greater than the molar heat capacity for an ideal gas at constant volume, Cv ? And why are we only focusing this difference in gasses and not in liquids or solids?

Standard Enthalpy of Combustion of Methane

On page twenty of the course reader, the enthalpy of the reaction of combustion of methane turns out to be -891 kJ. Why did Dr. Lavelle say if the enthalpy was positive, the substance would not be a good heat source? How can different signs let us know the difference?

Energy is basically the capacity of a system to do work, so if a system can do a lot of work that means it possesses a lot of energy. When a system does work on surrounding and not on system, the capacity to do work is reduced, thus energy has decreased. When their is work done on a system, there is...
