Re: More than one functional group
My TA actually said that we should know how to name molecules with two functional groups, or at least be able to recognize it because question 9B on the Winter 2015 practice final asks us to draw the molecules 1,3,4,5,6-pentahydroxy-2-hexanone and 3-hydroxypentanoic acid. These both have two functi...

quizzes 1-3 solutions
Hello,
I was just wondering if there was a place where the quiz solutions are posted so I might view them as a way to study for the final. I feel like i saw that somewhere for 14a but wasn't able to find anything on either website for 14b

CycloHeptane Line structures
Hello, taking a chance here and requesting that there are no cycloheptane compounds on the final exam that we have to draw the line structure for. I know it has seven carbons but on the quiz we had one and i spent more time trying to figure out how to draw the shape out with seven carbons than I sho...

Common Names v IUPAC
Since the common names were made before the IUPAC do we HAVE to know the common names and their structure at this point .. for example will we be given problems with common names rather than IUPAC names and be expected to draw them or give the formula based on that on the quiz or final?

Gibbs Free energy in a nutshell?
I thought Gibbs was pretty simple but then when we go do problems things get a little confusing; if Gibbs represents the energy to do work for a spontaneous process, what is any energy that is not Gibbs and what is it doing?

Also, is energy not also a measure of heat? How can steam have more energy but still be the same te...

Re: Salts' Function In Buffers
The salt is the provider of the conjugate base, therefore by adding the salt will increase the conjugate base concentration. We add salts because they do not change the volume of the solution and because the cation that is paired with the conjugate base does not affect the pH (usually Na + or K + )...

Dissociation of Acids/base
Why don't weak acids completely dissociate and strong acids do even though a weaker acid also has a weaker bond? I would assume that with a weaker bond it would be easier to dissociate but that is not the case and I am not sure why or what key concept I am missing here

I keep reviewing the video from last Wednesday's lecture but I still do not understand how it is stronger. If pKa=0.52 for tricholoro and pKa=4.75 for regular acetic acid how is it that the pKa is 10,000 times stronger? I see the trend that the larger the pKa the weaker the acid as it would be on th...

Re: solvents in chemical equilibrium
I think your best bet would be to go by definition and look at your chemical equation. "A solvent is a substance that dissolves a solute (a chemically different liquid, solid or gas), resulting in a solution. A solvent is usually a liquid but can also be a solid or a gas." SO look at the r...
