Substituent question

If the substituent has the same number, what happens?

I know in the course reader it says "the 1st named group gets lower number" but what does that mean? Can someone provide an example please?

Entropy and multiplicity

When solving for entropy, when do you use (to find W) 2^N and N!/n1!n2! ?

Thanks!

Re: Chemistry Jokes

Joke: “What is the difference between thermodynamics and a stick?

Answer: “A stick has two ends and no beginning. Thermodynamics has two ‘beginnings’ (the first and second law) and no end.”

Reversible Reactions question

Hi, does a reversible reaction always do more work than an irreversible reaction? If so, why? and if not, then when does an irreversible reaction do more work?

Re: Heat Capacity

Hi! As Elizabeth said above, solving for heat capacity is very different since each problem varies upon what details it gives you. To better explain, since I don't want to chop up the words, http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/Physical_Chemistry/Thermodynamics/Calorimetry/Heat_Capacity"onclick="window.open(...

Question regarding Enthalpy

Is it true that the delta H value for the forward reaction is negative the delta H value for the reverse reaction?

If so, please explain why this is true.

When Z greater than or equal to 8 and Z<8 clarification

Hi all, I'm confused as to what Z is... and how the MO diagram looks when Z is greater than or equal to 8, and Z is less than 8. So my question is, what is Z? If you have a molecule like CO, then what Z would you use to figure out what diagram to use? For z<8, then sigma is above pi and z> or equal ...

Confusion between molecular geometry?

Hi, I memorized the shapes and its names, however on the review questions for the quiz that were posted, we were asked to name the ESG and MG? What is the difference between the two and will we be expected to know both for the quiz/midterm?

Thanks :)

Help with Chem Problem!

A friend asked me to help her with a chemistry problem, but I'm not sure how to do it.

Which of the following metals requires UV light to exhibit the photoelectric effect?
a) Cs, Work function= 1.95 eV
b) Ag, Work function= 4.74 eV
c) K, Work function= 2.29 eV
d) Y, Work function= 2.90 eV

Please help with homework 1.44

The question in case you were wondering is:
What is the minimum uncertainty in the position of a hydrogen atom in a particle accelerator given that its speed is known to within +/- 5.0 m/s.

Thank you in advanced.
