If asked on the final to draw the most stable conformation or the boat conformation, do we have to draw it in 3D with a small shading part?

Re: Quiz 3 Winter 2016

When being asked to name a compound, are we going to have to give the IUPAC and common name? Or, is just the IUPAC name okay? (For the final also?)

Rate Constant

So for the rate constant of a first order reaction will the slope always turn out negative and then you k is the negative of the slope? What if the slope is positive would you still place a negative in front to get k? Does this only refer to first order reactions?

Quiz #1

It seems like we are almost done with chapter 9 in the course reader, and Lavelle said up to the end of Friday's lecture, which was the start of Gibbs Free Energy, will be on the quiz. So when reading chapter 9 in the book, how much of the reading (sections) on Gibbs free energy will be on the quiz?

Phase Change Picture

Hi guys :) so I just wanted to add a link for a phase change graph. I thought it was pretty cool cause it has a few more details and is a bit more clear than the picture in the course reader (or if you do not have the course reader). So, here's the link: http://mrzimmerman.org/New%20Folder/HW/phases...

Re: Using the word ion

The phrase ion is used at the end when you are naming an ion complex which like Rachel said is when the complex has a negative or positive charge. When it is just a coordination compound (neutral charge), you do not say ion after you write out the name.

Re: Order of ligands

Within the coordination sphere, you write the transition metal first. Afterwards, you write the anionic ligands followed by neutral ligands.

Calculating the value of K

This is a question from Chapter 11 homework page 457 problem 11.37B. So it originally gives you the equation N2 + 3H2 -> 2NH3 and a K that is equal to 41 In part B, it asks you to find K for (1/2)N2 + (3/2)H2 -> NH3 I noticed that each coefficient had decreased by half, but the solution manual says ...

Re: Question: Wave Model vs. Photon Model of Light

I believe the wave model demonstrated that light had only contained wave properties. Therefore, it did not involve the idea of quanta. The photoelectric effect, like Neil said, proved that light has wave and particle properties. It showed that if light had only wave properties, then electrons should...
