Question 3 on Final 2014

Can someone please help with Question #3 (the one with Pikachu) on the Winter 2014 Final? I am really lost as to how things were chosen for part A.

Determining Anodes and Cathodes

When given a word problem about a standard electrochemical cell such as: A silver electrode being placed into a 1.0M Ag+ solution and a cadmium electrode being placed into a 1.0M Cd2+ solution. How do we tell which is going to act as the anode and which will act as the cathode? Thanks.

Ethane vs Ethene Heat Capacity

Hi all, I'm doing the Winter 2011 Final and came across the question whether or not ethane or ethene has the higher heat capacity. Can someone explain to me why the answer is ethane? I would've thought the double bond in ethene would've contributed to a higher heat capacity. Secondly, Why does NO ha...

Re: Chemistry Jokes

Not so much of a joke but more a humorous observation. Has anyone noticed that when you say the equation:
S = KblnW it sounds a lot like: Entropy is equal to Boltzmann's constant times Ellen DeGeneres-y???

Question about the final

If the final is going to be 8 questions like the midterm, but we are also given an extra hour, does that mean we can expect each question to have more parts (a,b,c,d etc.) than the midterm?

Cyclohexane problem

In the quiz workbook, there was a problem where an isopropyl and 2 methyls were attached to a cyclohexane right next to each other. Following the fact that isopropyl comes before dimethyl in the alphabet, I had named it 1-Isopropyl-2,2,-dimethylcyclohexane. The answer however switched the numbers (2...

4-Chloro-2-Butanol

Can someone please explain to me why on page 104 of the course reader the Chloro in 4-Chloro-2-Butanol comes before the Butanol? Why does this break the alphabet rule?

Course Reader Example

In the course reader, we went over examples of transition phases, and I remember there was an example in which we showed Bromine bonding to Hydrogen in the transition phase, but it was later pulled off before the next transition phase even took place. What is the purpose of that bond being shown if ...

Half Life Patterns

Can someone please explain to me why it is that 2nd order reaction half lives get larger with each subsequent time interval, zero order gets smaller, but 1st order remains the same? What is the conceptual reason behind this?

Oxidizing and Reducing Agents

Can someone please explain the idea behind oxidizing and reducing agents? I learned in discussion that they are the exact opposite of what their name implies so some clarification would be nice. Thanks

Enthalpy and Entropy

Is the process for calculating the change in enthalpy for a certain substance undergoing phase changes (when we use the heating curve) essentially the same as calculating the change in entropy? (differing in just the values obviously). Thanks!

Entropy vs Gibbs

Can someone please explain to me the difference between entropy and Gibbs free energy in terms of spontaneity? I remember when we learned about entropy, it was described as having to do with spontaneity but now I don't see the distinction - conceptually - with that and Gibbs free energy.

In the equation Qsystem = -Qsurroundings, is the (-) sign only there to account for the idea of work being done vs by a system?
