Organic chemistry is difficult. Those who study it have alkynes of trouble.

Quiz 2 - Chain reactions and Steady State

Will chain reactions and steady state approximations be on the second quiz? I don't believe they were covered during lecture.

Re: When are delta G and delta S zero?

The problem asks which of the following are not equal to 0, so why is the dS of the surroundings not equal to 0 also?

Re: Why is the melting of helium not endothermic?

basically because it only takes energy (is endothermic) when you're trying to put something in a less stable state.

Re: Explaining kJ/mol

kJ/mol is how many kJ needed for one mol of a substance to absorb/release in order for the entire mol to have all its bonds broken or formed. Ex: if it takes 100 kJ to break all the bonds in 2 mols of substance A-B, then then enthalpy change would be +50kJ/mol.

Gas # of Moles, Increase the pressure

I dont understand why if you increase the pressure on a system of gasses, the reaction does move towards the end that has a lesser number of gas mols. It seems that it would make more sense for a higher pressure to change the K value so that the gasses take up "less space"

Re: Determining which of these molecules are diamagnetic.

also if the atoms have a Z value less than 8 that they will most likely have a different para/dia value than another pair of atoms w the same number of valence electrons with a Z value greater than 8. This is because the sigma bonds are of a higher E level in atoms with Z value less than 8

so does this mean if we are only given the mass of CO2 and H20 and told they are the products, are we to assume that the initial reactants were only CH and O2?

Re: Do we need to memorize the periodic table?

Memorizing the periodic table will be a waste of your time however if you remember the weights and numbers of C, N, Ca, O, Cl, Na, and H then you will save yourself a good amount of time. Otherwise don't worry too much about it.
