Polarity of Water
I know that water is a polar molecule. And I know that it is an amazing solvent. But, why does the polarity of water make it such a good solvent?

Concept of "Cold"
I recently read that there is no such thing as "cold" according to thermodynamics. The sensation of "cold" is actually really just an absence of heat. How then, does does adding ice to hot coffee cause it to become more cold if we are just adding quantities of substance that are ...

Re: Formal Charge and its significance
So to elaborate on this topic, I will use BeCl2 as an example. When drawing out the Lewis Structure, we should go with Cl-Be-Cl instead of Cl=B=Cl even though the latter "looks" better (because the central atom would have an octet), because the formal charge of the first one would be zero?

Shielding
So basically: The effective nuclear charge of an electron in a p orbital would be lower than that of one in an s orbital because the s orbital is shielding the p orbital in that situation? And it would be even lower in a d orbital because it has the s orbital AND the p orbital shielding it? Am I on ...

Re: Molecular Formulas and Rules for Figuring out their Name
I have a general understanding of how to name compounds when ending with "-ide." However, what is the rule (if any) for figuring out how to name a compound ending in "-ate" or "-ite" etc.? Thanks!
