Re: SN2 carbon-hydrogen bonds

The different bond shapes are used to show the 3-D Lewis Structure in 2-D. They show the way in which atoms of a molecule are arranged in space. A broken wedge means that the hydrogen atom is behind the page and the completely filled in wedge means that the hydrogen atom is out in front of page.

Re: Arrhenius Equation

The constant A deals with the frequency of molecule collisions in the correct orientation and with enough energy to initiate a reaction. It is determined experimentally, varying with different reactions. In some problems, it is ignored because it isn't directly involved in relating temperature and a...

Re: Cell potential

How does the negative or positive values either designate the half reaction as being electron donating or electron receiving. 14.6 page 579-580 is somewhat unclear to me! The negative or positive values don't necessarily designate the half reaction as electron donating or electron receiving; however...

Re: Salt Bridge Effectiveness

The effectiveness of a salt bridge is determined by the concentration of the electrolyte solution. If the concentration is below saturation, an increase would also increase conductivity, but if the electrolyte concentration is beyond saturation, conductivity is lowered. The salt bridge should be a r...

Re: Biochemical systems- irreversible/reversible

We can analyze how irreversible a process is and what is necessary to maximize efficiency, but there are no true reversible processes. In practice, all real processes are irreversible although some can be good approximation of reversible ones if you go really slow. Thermodynamics goes a long way in ...

Re: Example in course reader

The change in enthalpies have different signs because one reaction requires heat while the other releases heat. Breaking bonds requires energy, making it endothermic and resulting in a positive change in energy; while forming bonds releases energy, making it exothermic and resulting in a negative ch...
